Probably a dumb question, but has anyone else experienced this?

I was bidding on an item in ebay but didn't win. Two days later I get a fairly official ebay looking email saying the highest bidder pulled out and now the seller is offering me a second chance to buy the item.

So I enter into an email exchange with the sender of this email and agree a price and then I receive a confirmation email, looking like it came from aw-confirm@ebay.com asking me to arrange transfer of funds by Moneygram.

So, I'm looking into setting up this payment and now find I've received three more offers to buy the very same item but all from different people.

Fortunately no money has changed hands but I'm bitterely disappointed at missing out as it was a pressent for my Dad's 70th birthday.

Having looked carefully now at all the email addresses, none of them match the original seller Duh!.

I contacted the real seller to see if he knows anything about this and confirms he sold the item to the winning bidder.

So how to report this scam and should I now contact this muppet and say I sent your money where's my item?

I've had a number of these and was nearly sucked in first time. I forwarded the email to ebay and their response was that it looked genuine (Automated Reply). I managed to string the scammer along for quite some time once I became suspicious.

I had one of these too, Contacted Ebay who said that could they have a copy of the original email, which I duely sent them.
They confirmed it was NOT from them & do not under any circumstances reply or action anything on that email.
Similar things have been comming through from, what looks like at first, many of the High Street Banks. If in doubt about any of these emails & think they may be genuine DO NOT use the email link. Instead go in via the web site. That way you know it's going to be secure & You have chosen the path. Not relyed on an email which "looks" like the real thing.
There are some very clever B**tards out there so, if you have the slightest doubt. Don't do it.
The £££££ are better in your bank account than some Crooks account.

Can happen easily. There is a 'second chance offer' facility for sellers. I've used it to buy something for which I was the 2nd highest bidder for an item, and I've also used it to try and sell something again (after the original buyer messed me about).

Wont help your particular situation, but eBay have just initiated a new service called 'My Messages' which can only be accessed by logging into your account and going to My eBay. This is where they will inform you of any problems with your account and/or ask you to change account/credit card details, so hopefully combating all those spoof emails.

About bloody time!

Sorry guys, I've found them to be bloody hopeless.
I have nmade numerous complaints about obvious scams, including one that went to Trading Standards, and they did nothing about it.

I get about 20 of those please enter your ebay account and password details a month. I tend to enter things like;

Ebay Account "I shagged your mum last week"
EBay Password "and she was "

Address "so I shagged your sister"
Address "she was too"
Postcode "up yours you thieving scum"

Credit card number "like I am about to give that to you, stupid f"
Exirydate "dumb fk st eating weasel"

etc etc etc

you get the drift.

If we all did that wouldn't it be like a denial of service attack for them wading through all that pointless flack.

Anyone know how to find out where these scum are based?

i don't honestly think ebay will do much - there is so much fake crap on ebay that people are getting ripped off with, i think it's unlikely that they bother targeting anyone trying to pull scams.

Ah a man who shares my sense of humour. I must admit that I am currently entering in the names and addresses of the worlds leading despots. I have done Gengis Kahn, Hitler and Pol Pot (which I had to cut and paste stuff cos I cant type Cambodian). I also try to ensure that I get as many swear words into the forms as possible..... did actually manage more than 50 once, but suspect that you can get much much more....

I would just love to see the scammers faces when presented with this. Mind you, we arent the only ones and I am sure they get used to it.... funny though....
