Being a shift worker I tend to eat at pretty weird times and all thats available is a microwave to provide the 'heating' element of the equation, ie no grill or cooker etc.

Ive just had one of tescos healthly living chicken tikka things and it wasnt bad - I was pleasantly surprised. So, whats the king of microwave meals?

And are there any real nasties out there that should be avoided at all costs???

when we moved into the new house, there was no cooker but a microwave, so for a week we lived off crap.

the best were anything from sainsburys. we dont normally shop there but we had to given.....

.....the worst were tescos chinese things in a clear tub. they were £5 for 2 and have to be the foulest things in the world ever. the chicken turned to rock solid chunks of grey, the rice turned to a mush and the "vegetables" wouldnt cool down if they were left outside for a week. nothing would eat them, birds, next doors dog....

Sainsbury's ready-meal curries (made by Noon), are superb. They taste freshly-made unlike the Tescos equivalents that taste like, er, ready-meals. M&S ones (also made by Noon, IIRC), are just as good.

You can't beat Bachelor's Savoury Rice Costs about 60p per sachet and makes a very filling dish for one. I usually add some tomato sauce, mayonaise, peas, soya sauce and what ever else I can think of

That's gross. It sounds like the recipe for the stuff in the vomit machine in Little Brtain

Should imagine it smells realistic as well

Asda have a curry bar where you can chose your curry, rice etc. Or go for mexican or chinese. Then head home and heat up.

Not bad at all.

Asda curries - fresh packed from the deli counter (not the pre-packed ones) are very good and not too pricey.

Microwaves do the Devil's work for drunkards. I've staggered through the door many a time, dived head first into the freezer, emerged with a random treasure and zapped it for a random length of time. Cue two hours of fitful sleep then a sprint for the bathroom. The worst ever was a toad in the hole I discovered and decided would microwave well. Unwell is an understatement. Lasted a week too

Im the same on late shifts. Butties for tea are not great and only have a microwave.
tonight its shepards pie
wednesday night was beef stew and dumplings
tuesday night was chicken and pasta.

Near enough anything is edible when you are atarving on a shift and some of these ready meals look more apetising than the canteen (which charges through the roof!!!)

The new steam-cooked stuff is fairly reasonable, and actually feels like a healthy meal for the first 3 nights or so
