It’s about time I had an eye test and replaced my specs. In fact I’m well overdue. The last time I use Vision express. I was quite pleased with their service and having the specs ready in an hour or so is brilliant. Just wondered what experiences others have had with them or the other big opticians.
Also are the small independent guys more competitively priced these days?

I go to a small independant. Really friendly, very efficient.

They don't do 2 for one offers, yet strangely enough the galsses are less than half the price of the biggies that do these offers...

Small independants are more pricey but offer more choice. Most of the big names stock very similar frames. Having said that I was impressed with the attention to detail in vision express when I had my last test there.

There is nothing to stop you having your test there and buying your specs elsewhere.

I see you're in Norfolk. If you're ever in Peterborough I can fully recommend Henry Smith and Hamilton. Friendly and an excellent range to choose from.

I've always gone to an independent one. It's the same one I've been registered with since I was 5 and they've always given fantastic service.

Decide what you want to buy, get a budget in mind then go to an opticians and have a chat. Independants can usually source some very good deals and have a larger choice. Specsavers are probably the cheapest opticians on the high street but there extras often bump the price up significantly.

Just remember specatcles are often on your face 16-18hrs a day so be prepared to pay for quality.
Armani spex about £120
Armani jeans about £120
which will you get the most wear out of.

I've just got a new pair of Starck specatcles, frame on its own was £280 and the new Nikon lenses (Ikon) were £110. The most comfortable pair I've worn so far.

Please note I own the opticians and get to try lots of specatcles.

I used Vision Express recently and received some excellent service. The young girl told me the glasses made me look like a film star, so I bought three pairs.

I will be returning next time I need new glasses and an ego boost!

I just go to most if not all in the high street. I then only find at most half a dozen pairs that I actually like and would consider buying - never seems to be the cheap ones though no matter how many times you try them on and convince yourself they look good!

I got my present pair from Vision Express. Never been 100% happy with them. I need a diabetic eye test now so I will go to an independantthis time.

Vision Express had their window put through today in our town.

Had it replaced within the hour though.

My experience with Vision Express was horrendous. 5 months, 9 pairs of lenses, two eye tests and three pairs of glasses later (that are still not right) I would suggest that only if you have a simple prescription they are OK to use. Anything complicated use a small well regarded independant. Worth the extra cash.

I've been tempted from time to time but there is always something more urgent that needs the money.... Or maybe I’m just a big Scaredy Cat.

Thanks for the response guys. I think I’m heading for an independent this time.
