The time had come to invest in a pet, against my better judgement I have finally conceeded.

A dog is too time consuming, can't see the point in fish as they provide no interaction for the children, rodents, rabits and the like, I will end up being the one who has to clean them out.

I have narrowed my choice to a male (just to even the balance of power in a female dominated household) blue persian cat, what do I need to look out for, and what are the hidden costs likely to be?

May not always be in the peak of health, pedigrees tend to be a bit delicate. I'd get a moggie myself, still up to you.

What's wrong with an old fashioned moggie?

I'd go for a female if possible, less smelly

But IMHO the best cats are your normal household moggy, you get to save one from being put down too

Try the RSPCA or CPL

no, male cats are far friendlier. Females are fickle little buggers.

With experience of 2 long haired cats (moggies), one of which is white, get yourself a short, dark haired moggie unless you want to be forever hoovering and using sticky rollers!

I have tried all my local rescue centers and no moggie kittens, this one is from a breeder but she has struggled to find him a home as studs don't fetch much money

I have no desire to breed from him and therefore he will ne neutered.

Based on this mornings "surprise" while supping my morning tea in bed I'd say don't bother with one at all.

Bloody cat, obviously desperate for a piss but would neither go out of the front door or the back door, presumably because of the cold.

I went back to bed with my cuppa, settled down to read the news on the laptop, a few minutes later joined by the cat.

Next thing he jumps off the bed looking a bit shifty.

Girlfriend comes out of the shower, looks at the bed and says "What's that dark patch on the duvet?"

Cat had only gone and squatted down and pissed on the duvet, soaking right through to the mattress.

Plus long hair = messy, smelly waste sticking where it shouldn't and being pressed into the carpet every time the bugger sits down.
Hence bi-monthly trip to the vets to have his backside trimmed.

I am going for a long haired cat, in order to give my eldest daughter the responsibilty of grooming him.It will be very obvious if she doesn't do this job propery.

I used to have a Persian Blue, but someone nicked it

My brother has a Maine Coone - similar long hair thing to the Persian Blue. If you don't groom it A LOT, it will get matted and you get nasty clumps of fur collecting in various places which need precision clippers to remove - a hard task when it is clawing at you to try and get away. But keep on top of it and it's exellent.

I now have 2 medium haired tabby moggies (brother and sister) and they are great characters, despite the boy being a right git and hiding round the corner and attacking your feet on hangover mornings...

We were going to get a Maine Coone kitten but decided in the end to get a resuce cat.

Aren't they the wierdest thing? Look like a big cat but seem to exhibit characteristics of a dog. Can't explain it. Do you know what I mean?

Get a Ginger Tom and have it's bits away..

Ours used to roam the neighbourhood at night and murder anything smaller than a dog and leave it laid out in front of the fireplace.

Go for a female! They are much more affectionate!

We have a black and white mongrel tomcat and he loves attention but hates affection.

Can't get near the damned thing.....

My brother has a long haired persian. Fecking nightmare BUT he does let his out into the garden etc and it just gets covered in crap, twigs, leaves all sorts! So guess you need to work out if it's a house only pussy!

Harry Hill I think is looking for a good home for his Persian Blue the one he calls STUPER. Just need to stick your hand up its ar*e and interact to your hearts content. Added bonus no need to feed or water and no poo's on the carpet. Live a long time too

If you're planning to get an adult cat, then a rescue cat is a great idea. If you're planning to get a kitten however, don't get one, get two. They'll be no more trouble and lots more fun.
