After a friendly PHer recommended the Sennheiser MX500s I went and got a set from Ebay and what a difference!
So much more of an open sound with less of the compressed bass, delivered from the good old Hong Kong in 3 days for a total of 13 quid.
It also gets rid of the 'I've got an Ipod white headphones!'
Really impressed!

You can buy ipod earphones with the controller from Apple for about £35.
I sold JUST my ipod earphones for £27 on ebay...
I've had three pairs of Sony earphones in the last 4 years which clip around your ear but don't go internally. Great earphones... don't last longer than about 8-12months though.
Gonna go to Sennheiser or Bang&Oulfsen next
