I have seen a number of adverts recently ( MacDonalds, a kids game, a del prado crapulent magzine etc) that have been shown on terrestrial television that contain a rider saying the product is not available in the Tyne Tees region.

Why?

Anyone know?

Is it something to do with the Cleveland social services child abuse thingie?

Very odd.

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

I asked a friend in newcastle about the Mcdonalds thing, and she said it's because they are running a trial offer on some new deli sandwiches in the tyne tees area.

Which ITV area are you in?

Do you neighbour the Tyne Tees area? A lot of companies do special offers by TV area, but of course the TV signal will overlap. Hence the need to say that it doesn;t apply in a neighbouring area.

Not sure I have explained this well!

I believe that Tyne Tees is quite an isolated area, with a good mix of demographics. It's therefore a good place to run fairly widescale test marketing programmes. Preston/Leyland is similarly good for smaller tests. Newspapers often use London, within the M25, as it fits their production system.

McDonald's will have wanted a 'clean' test, unaffected by the 2for1 offer, so they can be sure the results for the deli sandwiches aren't biased. However, on a national basis, they couldn't afford to halt the 2for1 promotion.
The promotion ad may not have run in Tyne Tees (they probably had a special deli ad), but enough people will have seen it somewhere else (Newbury) and have travelled to Newcastle. TV viewers assume TV ads for national brands mean a national activity. Therefore the ads need a cop out nationally (though more often it is a simple 'participating outlets only')
