Man peed way out of avalanche

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi car was buried in the Slovak Tatra mountains.

He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out.

But as he dug with his hands, he realised the snow would fill his car before he managed to break through.

He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.

He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

Parts of Europe have this week been hit by the heaviest snowfalls since 1941, with some places registering more than ten feet of snow in 24 hours.

Couldnt he have poured the beer on the snow for the same effect?

I like his thinking. You can either pour the beer straight onto the snow, or drink the beer and piss on the snow

That's the craziest idea I've ever heard!

That sounds like a load of bollocks to me.

Remember the laws of thermodynamics?

He would have achieved a similar effect by stripping naked and melting the snow with his skin, then using the beer to warm himself up? Or something like that.

Surely it's easier to surround a small amount of cold with warmth (the beer) rather than surrounding a small area of warmth (his body) with a large amount of cold and dying of hypothermia.

Even if that's cobblers I know which way I'd do it

He'd probably die of hypothermia though. The laws of thermodynamics apply to more objects rather that people as his body will generate heat. (IYSWIM)

If he did it your way, he'd get very cold and then drink beer which acts as a peripheral vasodilator (ie puts blood flow through your extremities) which would chill him further. His way, he warms the fluid while also giving himself calories (admittedly he gets the vasodilator effect, but without being bloody cold first.)

Man peed way out of avalanche
A British man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

It's true, here's a first-hand account:

And if you're going to die of hypothermia anyway, you might as well go out pissed out of your tiny little mind than let 60 bottles of beer go to waste.

I was merely being silly, if you think about the equilibrium of temperatures, matey is using his body as a beer heater. Making it 35 degrees (say) if the snow is -5 deg (say) His piss melt 7 times it's own volume. This will be less because the piss will cool as he pisses, it also isn't a homogenous spray. These 2 effects (piss cooling and spray factor) would be inversely proportional. Say he manages to piss 50 litres, he will melt at maximum (probably 2/3 of it) 350 litres of snow. This is not taking into account the salt content of the piss (which can be assumed negligable), I will assume that the density of snow is about 1/4 that of water, which brings into the ballpark of 1M^3! Not very much! I assume that he pissed out of his car window until he dissolved enough snow to open the door and then dug himself out!

The pissing is merely incidental to opening the door, which he would have been to achieve if he wasn't pissed!

Yes, but "man digs his way out of snowed-in car" is unlikely to get get featured as an item of news and then discussed on internet fora throughout the world.

It would have been ironic if, after melting the snow, he'd driven his car and killed himself by being drunk at the wheel!

Surely it would have been better to get a stiffy and use it to melt to snow in the manner of a thermic lance ?
