I want to try an get this film on DVD for my dad. But I can't think of the name or any of the actors in it. I've only watched it once, many years ago. But basically the story went as follows:
It was a Sci-Fi.
The ship contained a number of huge (Eden Project) style domes on it, containing plant life and wild life etc from earth. As I think, earth was partly destroyed.
It was maned by a number of crew and a few robots.
They were then ordered to destroy these domes, but one crew member went ape and killed all of his collegues in order to save the wild life.
He then went on to become good friends with these robots, but one by one they too perish, leaving this sado on his own in space.
Can anyone tell me the name of this film.

That's the one - moving soundtrack for a Scifi if I recall!

Sung by Joan Baez I think.

The spacehip is called "Valley Forge" and a lot of the on board footage was shot on an old retired aircraft carrier called, you guessed it, USS Valley Forge.

The film was directed by Douglas Trumbull who directed the "Stargate" sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I have to admit that the effects depicting the rings of Saturn are pretty rubbish though.

And they had a fair idea back in 1971 when the film was made that the rings were made of ice particles - and not "smoke" as it appears to be in "Silent Running".

Can anyone help with this one:

It was a nuclear thriller starring someone like Rock Hudson or Burt Lancaster as a submarine captain, when the USA and USSR attack each other and destroy civilisation etc etc... Can't remember any more details and can't find it on IMDB...

Any ideas?

"Fail Safe".

The serious version of "Dr Strangelove".

On second thoughts, maybe not. I've just looked it up and neither Lancaster or Hudson star.

Hudson was in Alistair Maclean's "Ice Station Zebra" which, whilst set in the Cold War did not result in the world being nuked into oblivion.

On the otehr hand, "On The Beach" does end up with the world being destroyed.

Thanks Eric, it was "On The Beach" and starred Gregory Peck... I knew it was one of that type of Hollywood leading man!

Cheers again...

"On the Beach" was based on the novel by Nevil Shute, who, as Nevil Shute-Norway, worked for Vickers Armstrong as an engineer and was involved in the design of the R100 airship and the Vickers Wellesley and Wellington bombers as part of the team under Barnes Wallis.
