Home self defence - a worry...
Discussion
This new legislation that allows a homeowner to use force to protect his or her family and belongings sounds good in theory, however i read this with a bit of worry.
Whereas previously a burgular could enter a house, nick a dvd player or something and not have to worry about getting shot... now they will know if the homeowner catches them they could be in for a beating. I know this is totally wrong and the burgulars deserve everything that gets thrown at them... they're the scum of the earth.
However... my worry is the burgulars will now start arming themselves, so if they are approached by a homeowner they will shoot or pull a knife or something which could lead the homeowner to be killed or seriously hurt.
It's deterance theory all over again... like the Cold War. Both sides arm themselves further to you get to a point where any small skirmish will lead to a total war.
This whole legislation is just there because crime in this country is at a bad level... if the police started working on ways to prevent crime, instead of giving the right to violence to more people... there wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

You're assuming that they're not armed with something anyway. TBH, if someone's broken into a house that's occupied, they're already prepared for some sort of confrontation, and will be equipped accordingly IMHO.
Thats true... but i would assume most criminals are less than brainiacs so this will be a wakeup call to arm... its just a thought of mine.. not definite in mind.
There is a difference between a burglar and a robber.
A robber will be armed and expecting combat - they go to prison if caught.
A burglar will leg it if hear so much as a squeak from upstairs, as they know the consequences of accidentally being "upgraded" to a robber.
Either way, a good hoofing in the bollocks and a rusty nail in the bell end is a good start.
