Well as some of you know, my head gasket went on my car on the way back from Andover on Sunday. I had been visiting clients in Reading on that Sunday and was on my way to another when it died.

Anyway one of the clients that I sorted that weekend, a small accoutancy firm called me yesterday to thank me for the work I did and how they were very happy with the service that I had given them so far. As we were chatting I mentioned that I would not be back up to Reading for a while as I needed to sort out my imminent car problem.

10 mins later the phone rang. It was the accountant telling me that him and his business partner were going to pay £500 toward the cost of a new car as they were so impressed with the dedication and time that I had shown getting their IT back online! I told him it was not neccesary but he insisted. Really am lost for words!

Goes to show that there are a few good people out there. They are few and far between but they do exist. One day when I am out of my financial nightmare I hope to give the same gift to someone in my position.

How nice of them!

It is easy to forget that the vast majority of people are decent and kind.

Unfortunately it is a small minority that cause all the angst and stress in society for the decent folk.

Make sure you send them a thank-you letter (as my mum used to insist).

What did you do for them while you were there?

I know there's no naming and shaming.

Naming and applauding I can live with. Who are they?

It works both ways.

You do good work for them.

They are happy.

They help you out.

They know that they will get into your good books, and you will do more good work for them in the future, at a favourable rate, to the highest possible standard.

That's the way business should work, the travesty is that so often it doesn't.

They like you, and are showing it. Well done.

.... who will know how to claim it as a tax allowance.
Who cares, good for them. It's simple though as they'll get more than £500 worth of dedicated extra service out of you over the years as you appreciate them so much.

A bit of back scratching goes a long way.

I agree. Could you imagine somebody hiring this firm on the basis that they did something nice for a fellow PHer? That would be an instant way to pay them back, gh0st...

Not sure I want to post their names on an internet forum as I dont know whether they want to keep it a bit quiet, but I have recommended them to all the other small businesses in my area as an accountancy service.

They have always got preferential rates from me anyway as they are a good client, they pay well and when things go a little "kaka" from time to time they understand that, like most things in IT, its not always strightforward to fix. (especially when I took over from another maintainence company that had left them totally, and utterly, in the shite!)

So as I always have, I will continue to do my best for them and if I have my way they will reap that £500 back in new business at the very least.

So if you run your own company and want a good accountant, let me know and I will give you the name.
