As you all know , I'm a bit of a Bond nut.

MARTIN CAMPBELL TO DIRECT CASINO ROYALE,
THE 21ST JAMES BOND ADVENTURE

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the James Bond films, and MGM announced today that Martin Campbell will direct CASINO ROYALE, the 21st film in the 007 franchise.

This is Campbell’s second time as helmer of a James Bond film. In 1995 he directed the hit GOLDENEYE which introduced Pierce Brosnan to the role of 007 with great success.

Wilson and Broccoli said: “We are thrilled that Martin has accepted our offer to direct CASINO ROYALE. He is an extremely talented director and we believe he will help take our films in a new and exciting direction. He is currently finishing filming ‘Legend Of Zorro’, the sequel to ‘The Mask Of Zorro’, and will be joining EON Productions shortly to work on the development of the script with our writers, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.”

MGM Vice Chairman and COO Chris McGurk said: “Martin is an incredibly exciting filmmaker. GOLDENEYE was a wonderful movie and helped reinvigorate the Bond franchise. We’re thrilled to have him back to direct the newest Bond.”

Born in New Zealand, Campbell moved to England in 1966 and made his directorial debut on the popular TV series’ ‘The Professionals’ and ‘Minder’. He moved to America in 1986 to direct ‘Criminal Law’ and ‘Defenceless’. Following GOLDENEYE, he went on to direct ‘The Mask Of Zorro’, ‘Vertical Limit’ and ‘Beyond Borders’ and is currently directing ‘Legend Of Zorro’.

CASINO ROYALE will be released in 2006 and distributed world-wide by MGM. No decision has yet been made regarding casting for the role of ‘James Bond’.

Brilliant stuff! At least they're doing a Fleming novel rather than an OTT made-for-computer-game explosionfest. Hopefully if they choose their Bond properly they'll get the sophisticated coolness back too - Connery had it, Dalton had it, Brosnan had it for Goldeneye, so with any luck Martin Campbell will be able to get this one right.

My perfect Casino Royale cast?

James Bond - Clive Owen
Le Chiffre - Christian Bale (always thought Bond films were best when Bond and the villain were reasonably matched)
Rene Mathis - Jean Reno
Vesper Lynd - Cate Blanchett

And I know they'll replace Felix Leiter's part with Damien Falco, played by Mike Madsen.

Wonder how they'll do that scene with the carpet-beater and the chair with the hole in it, though...

James Bond movies have definitely "Jumped the Shark" IMHO. The Bourne movies are the new Bond, and much better...

I agree Raify. The Bourne movies have raised the bar. I think Brocoli and Wilson realise this (hopefully).
Die Another Day got slated for the crap CGI graphics (Wave surfing on the parachute) and the invisible Vanquish.
So hopefully they will return to the more plot related story lines of From Russia With Love (imo a classic) etc. and leave out the CGI.

...anyone know why Sony have been leaving messages on my voice mail?

Seriously...

I hear that Q will be consipicuously absent and that Samantha Bond will be retiring from her role as well.

Casino Royale will be a great start, but the remake of Thunderball will be a great thing (Sony pictures already have the Kevin McCrory rights...)

And quite rightly so.
You're expected to will a suspension of disbelief for a Bond film, but that went far beyond most people's ability and will.

(And I'm not having anyone staring in disbelief at my willy suspension, Baldrick)

Bond films have to go 'back to basics' (I hate that expression) if the franchise is to survive.

You mean the re-remake. Don't forget that 'Never Say Never Again' was a remake of 'Thunderball'.

Especially since the Bource films have brought intelligent espionage and realistic stunts back to the big screen

I always thought of Vesper as a little more dark hair and blue eyed than Blanchett could pull off. I'll post back when I think of a suitable replacement, but the rest of you cast is spot on...

I agree completely with the wave surfing. Absolute rubbish. It's been more than that recently though:

Tomorrow never dies: Terrible 'bad guy' Jonathan Pryce is a great actor, but what a stinky role! Rediculous story and poor effects.

Die another day: Another laughable bad guy. What was going on with that stupid suit he wears at the end???

they should get back to the proper stories, like From Russia with love. IMO, Diamonds Are Forever (my favourite) is as silly as a Bond movie should get.
