Can they ever be trusted? I thought id found the perfect job agency. They were pleasant on the phone, and found me a job inside a week.
When my company got arsey about my resignation and demanded a 4 week notice period I asked for the job agencys advice, seeing as theyd handled the rest of it so well. I said do I need to speak to my new employer myself at this point or are you still handling that side of things? They said let us speak to them, we will check the new starting date and get back to you. They called me back, yep everythings fine la la la.
Today I get a phone call from new employers asking why id put down the 28th as my start date rather than the 21st! apparently the agency didnt contact them at all to check the revised start date.
Lesson learned, once youve had the offer, all communication must go to the new employer, not the agency, however nice they may seem
Not a disaster, as employer is willing to rearrange stuff, but it does mean im starting on a bad note. Im having a bad day.

Thing to remember about recruitment agencies is that the employers are paying their fees, so they will concentrate their efforts in that direction. Once you've got the job, they will consider it 'job done'.
Once you've got the offer sorted, always contact the new employer to sort out the rest.

- Absolutely correct - every recruitment agency will proclaim that they are client focused to the client and candidate focused to the candidate. They use rubbish like full service companies but the reality of the fact is that they get payed by only one person and that is the client. The client says jump and the rec con says how high - if it screws you to save their reputation, they will not think twice. (There are a few exceptions of course but very rarely)thanks....
....not like Ph'ers to tar everyone with the same brush...
Chris,
It does seem odd what happened, but trust me, I work with a lot of clients and you would be surprised at the level of inadequacy in some companies HR Depts.
I had someone start with a client a couple of weeks ago and they didnt even have any passes or a desk ready. they claimed that they thought they were starting on 1st March not 1st Feb, despite them raising the offer paperwork.
Could have been the client and they are just proportioning the blame on the agency, could also be a crap agency. Not all clients, candidates or agencies are the same.
drop your new employers an email letting them know when you informed the agency. that way at least your ass is covered and the blame lies with one of the other parties.

Like in any company it boils down to the individual - some good, most crap!
I work in recruitment (Unfortunately!) and I firmly believe the agency should have spoken to the client to confirm your new start date, I can only assume either human error or plain laziness on the agency side.
There is a lot of anamosity towards recruiters and some of it justified (because there are a hell of a lot of sharks out there who ruin it for the rest of us) However my feelings are (and I've worked on the other side of the fence) is that this is a free service to the candidate(client pays the fee) and sometimes they really expect you to move the earth for them. Some you really can't please whatever you do for them - and this is all FREE!! for them.
What other service can you think of that gets you more money/autonomy, even a better life sometimes and does this all for fee? The reason for my moan is that a lot of candidates do not appreciate this service at all. (I understand burnt fingers by previous experiences or by reputation). But believe me any recruiter WANTS to get you the right job.
I always suggest: register with 2 or 3 specialist recruiters and always be honest with them.

From the unfortunate experience of temping, I've discovered that most agencies are terrible. There are some that arent that bad, and some I will never ever deal with again when I'm back in an appropriate role and recruiting.
There is however one I've dealt with that have been utterly, without a doubt, fantastic.
Adecco in Leighton Buzzard is excellent. Adecco nationally is a bit of a mixed bag, but the branch manager at leighton makes all the difference. Anyone in the area looking for staff, give him a call
(Nope, not working for them any more, but hey - credit where credit is due and all that, they arent all crap!)

I forgot to say. Just tell your new employer that you HAD informed the agency of your new start date & that you offered to tell the company direct, but the agency informed you they would do this.
Not your fault mate & I'd bet money that your new employer won't hold it against you. (new employer was probably worried you were going to keep putting it off & then not end up joining them)
I really don't think you need to worry.

I use two or three agencies to help me recruit staff. The other day one of my employees, who was sent to me six months ago by an agency (it cost me £6k) came to see me. He said that the agency had been on the phone to him, asking: (a) are you still happy? (b) if not, I've got another vacancy you might be interested in.
What the agency didn't expect was that the employee is now very loyal to me (because I've treated him well) and he told me about the approach. As such, I called the agency, gave them a piece of my mind and said that I won't deal with them again!

I don't blame you for sacking them at all.
My feelings on placed candidates are that you should never approach them for another job (whatever duration) however if they are desperate for a move, they can approach you after 1 year, no earlier.
6 mths is taking the pss
they will kick themselves for doing it now & good on your employee for telling you.
