Funny thing is, have you notice how certain absolute utter national 'obssessions' (football and soaps) are somehow tolerated and defended, yet anything else equivalent to it isn't.
Example - at home, if football's on, it's OK to have beer with your meal and eat it on a tray in front of the telly. If it's the F1... no you're not. Why?
Then again, me, and my entire extended family, couldn't care less for soaps, but absolutely love detective dramas - Frost, Morse, Waking The Dead, Dalziel & Pascoe, Silent Witness - pretty much everything with the exception of the pathetic Midsomer Murders. When one of these is on there's no point trying to phone anyone in my family at all - we'll just ignore it unless it's an ad break.
Incidentally, you'll know it's a family member if the phone rings as soon as an ad break comes on
