A friend has recently spent some time in a recording studio where she recorded a song that she had written. The studio owner/dj has included this song on a compilation of dance music which is due for release. He also wants her to perform this song live to promote the album. What should she reasonably expect from this financially and for recognition.I am a little concerned she may lose out here.

Uhhhhh, nothing Im afraid. If she gives her permission for it to be used then she is gaining the free exposure that his compilation album may receive. It is incredibly unlikely that an artist (unsigned) would get anything for being included on a promotional thing such as this - other than the bit of free advertising!

My advice, let him use it and then hope somebody hears it! Just make sure she keeps the rights to the song.

Wish her luck.
