For a beginner I'd suggest Bulgaria or Andorra as neither cost much (in case you don't like it).

However, both are far too South for skiing in April - so avoid

I was kind of thinking maybe Val D as it should have good snow this late as its a glacier resort. Just need somewhere with decent snow / slopes, The GF will be learning to ski hopefully before we go away.

For April I would reccomend Cervinia, Italy - lots of good Long Red runs. @ 2050M it's one of the highest resorts so Snow is good and it's usually very sunny at that time of year.

Italian food too.

Val D'isere might be ok that late, although all the runs are pretty if you're just starting I can imagine!

But, it does have Dicks Tea Bar and The Banana Bar and the aprés ski is superb...I'm off there tomorrow, actually! If you want a fab social as well...Go to Val. She'll be fine

Don't dismiss the US / Canada on price grounds... TBH we usually go there and don't find it much costlier than Europe, as all your costs once you get there are so much lower. With the currency X-rates as they are at present, things are even better.

You will also get better snow, and generally easier pistes depending on where you go - some of them are like motorways they are so wide !!

You'll need to choose carefully in Europe as April is leaving it pretty late, and that means that those resorts still with good snow will be busy...

Enjoy yourselves !!

La Thuile (Italy) is also a good bet late season and is covered by the same Ski-pass as Cervinia (and all of the Italian Val D'Aosta resorts).

You can check the snow conditions with webcams for Italy on;

Just got back this evening from a weeks boarding in Cervinia and had a superb time. It was my first time baoarding and the resort seemed ideal.

If you want any more info email me.

I'd recommend Tignes (which links to Val D'Isere).

Tignes is higher up (2,050-2,200m) than Val D, with the added attraction that you can go to AngelBar in Le Lavachet, and see if I'm still in pole position on the "6 B4 6" leaderboard for supping ale (28 mins)...

There are plenty of nice cruisy blues/greens at altitude, and although it hasn't snowed for a week, the dumping it's done in the last couple of weeks should still be there.

Top stations are around 3,000-3,300m, so they should be snow sure.
