Another Plumbing thread. Oooo.

Anyway, a few years back my mum had a Shower Fitted (Triton Replaced it last weekend after some fancy part lost the will, 6.5 years old, first time it broke. Superb) and since then there has been a juddering when the cold tap in the kitchen is turned on. Doesn't happen when the tap is on full, only when the tap is turned on slightly, up to full bore. The only thing is this problem is getting worse, as when the tap is turned on now, the Whole Bloody house shakes, the Pipes feeding the bathroom shake as do the cold pipes running through the loft, and the shower pulses too.

This is a pain in the but. Anyone got any ideas?

TIA
Stuart

As stated - air lock. They do sometimes sort themselves out of you open every tap.

Hmmm....

Sounds like water hammer. Maybe the pipe was unclipped from wherever it was secured when the shower part was removed. It won't be air, not in a mains water pipe. Unless it's one of the very few electric showers that work on tank fed supplies.

It is odd though.
It is conceivable that some disturbed shit has found it's way into the shower flow control or solenoid valve.....

Turn off the water and take it apart.

Ah, a plumber.

Ok, The Shower works fine.

it seems to be the Cold Tap in the kitchen that is the problem. Turn on any other tap in the house, all at the same time (except the Cold in the Kitchen) and there are no problem whatsoever.

Only when the Cold Tap is turned on is there a problem, and that is a pulsing through the tap, the water pulses, as do the pipes everywhere else.

Oh, and our shower is fed from the tank feed to the bathroom I believe, fed off 15mm.

A Pipe description. Cold Feed to kitchen is Tank, 15mm running Tap, Washing machine, Dishwasher and outside tape.

Hot feed is 15mm from HW Tank.

Cold feed to Bathroom is 22mm, Feeding a Sink Tap through 15mm, Bath Tap through 22mm and a Toilet through 15mm. Shower is spured off in loft using a 15mm T and gate tape 6 inches along pipe.

Hot Feed is 22mm from HW tank. 15 to Sink, 22 into bath.

Boiler is mains fed through 22mm, CH is Pumped.

Oh, No. Toilet is mains, Kitchen is mains fed.

Boiler is a Baxi-Back Boiler. Its definately mains fed (I mean for hot water rather than CH) cos last year when I fired a Screw through the CH pipe we didn't have to drain the tank to stop the Boiler and CH System from filling up while we drained it.

Please check that this is not the case. If it is then have it changed to mains ASAP. You cannot drink water from a domestic storage tank unless it has been properly designed as a "potable" storage tank with all the necessary insect screens, lid seals, etc etc.

Boiler is on a a sealed system I suspect.

[/pedant]

However, back to the kitchen. Sounds like the tap itself is causing water hammer within the mains pipework probably due to a problem with either the washer or, more likely, the seating. Turn off the water and open up the tap. Look for worn out washer, damage to seat. New washer, re-cut seat (Seat cutting tool)Maybe some shit came up the mains pipe when the stopcock was last disturbed.

Ta :thumbu:

I'm surprised the plumbers we've had in to look at this didn't suggest or even look at that.

Much head scratching went on but nothing got done
