Patty (left), pictured with her sister Selma, has been outed as a lesbian in The Simpsons

Top-rated US series The Simpsons has ended months of speculation by revealing the identity of Springfield's first gay resident.

In an episode that has just aired in the US, Marge Simpson's chain-smoking sister Patty was outed after Homer became an Internet minister for same-sex marriages.

Viewers saw Patty explain how she fell for professional golfer Veronica in the episode titled There's Something About Marrying, reports BBC Online.

However, there's a twist in the episode when Veronica actually turns out to be a man - his protruding Adam's Apple is unmasked at the altar.

Homer charges $200 to marry couples over the Internet in the much-hyped instalment of the animated series.

The episode is due to air in the UK in May

And if they had him come out, you'd have been complaining about how that's the easy way out, everyone knows already, etc, etc, etc...

Give 'em a break, it's not like cartoons have to be 100% accurate (cue Homer walking by window while sitting on the couch).

From what I have seen both Smithers and Millhouse are both heavily hinted as being gay, moreso the former, but neither are `out`

There was also that gay couple that Homer lived with at one point.

Waste of time IMO. If they had chosen a couple of super fit cartoon babes to start with they may have convinced people to see the point.

The Simpsons is plain rubbish now. Take a look at seasons 2-5 - classic writing, hilarious. Now its just 'another wacky adventure'.

I stopped watching it years ago.

South Park, however, is brilliant.

Millhouse had a girlfriend in a recent episode. Non-stop snogging that drove Bart mad.
Smithers has been portrayed as having a homosexual thing for Mr Burns in quite a few episodes.
