Jamie's School Dinners..
Discussion
Caught this last night and whether you like him or not I think it highlighted some interesting stuff about the funding schools get, or don't.
37p for each childs school dinner is shocking. I am not surprised that children are becoming more unhealthy, the quality of the food was atrocious.
Does anyone know if this amount is the total or just the school funded bit, we always had to pay for school dinners, albeit not very much.

I have a feeling school diners are subsidised by the school to 37p per child, the school has to make up any other money to make the meals. They also have to employ the staff - I wouldn't be surprised if thats where most of the £1.50 per meal goes to (since the 37p is already paid).
I must say listening to him swearing at every other word had me cringing - I was interested in the program, but wanted to switch it off due to his language.

I thought his comment about how in the restaurant game they worked out the cost of the food added 65% to get the menu price was utter twaddle. I seem to recall the principle is>>
Menu price = 4.5 times cost of ingredients
or summat like that.
Considering that these fly on the wall docs are edited cruelly and most of it is done by smoke and mirrors I really could not believe he had gone into that without previous though as to how he could achieve the budget.
I guess not all schools are the same, Miss FiF's academy only provides chips one day a week. They have a swipe card system so parents can stipulate rules which have to be followed. See its not just New Labour that are control freaks.
Mind you the bottled water they sell is so high in sodium content probably all the kids will have hypertension.

The point of the program is that its perfectly possible to provide a healthy and nutritious meal for £0.37 per head, just that many schools choose to outsource meals, and that many dinnerladies can't actually cook food.
I remember my school meals, and this was more than 16 years ago - chips, pie, peas, beans, etc. No packaged food was available, it was all served by the dinnerladies, but I don't ever remember getting much veg.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I admire Jamie Oliver for what he has achieved, he comes across as a decent fella, hardworking and has an ability to relate to all sorts.
Yes he swears, but
me don't we all.
If nothing else I hope this highlights the fact that we can't harp on about GB becoming full of obese people when from an early age they are fed sh1te!.....and it was sh1te.
Liked his Masser too!

What they didn show you is the fact that some kids refused to eat his food and their parents had to deliver them fast food during lunchtime so they could eat...
Astounding really.
Or was that the point you were making?
Indeed.
Parents have known for some time that school dinners are crap, they were probably crap when they were at school and nothing has changed.
So fat tongued mockney git comes along and tries to do something about it.
Children then play up.
The parents now have a choice, pander to the wants of their little darlings or stand by the common sense decision regarding nutrition and let them starve until tea time if thats what they want.
Now I know what I would have done and it wouldnt have been the former.

Yep. It just shows the current level of stupidity in parents.
My parents dished me out with a packed lunch which I could eat while charging around chasing a football.... 2 cheese and pickle sandwiches and an apple is a better option than school dinners!....

Why can't schools just do one healthy meal that the kids can have for free - just something simple like a big pot of stew with some veg (as long as it's made with decent ingredients).
If they want junk food then they can pay for it
Gruel ?
Nothing fancy, just good, nourishing, tasty food - maybe a bit of pasta sometimes, or rice. Nothing to dislike about that and all cheap and easy to make
Likewise think it's a sad indictment on parents. How many times have you heard people crying about how expensive it is to make "proper" food, or "I just haven't got the time..." I think it was a good point that was made by the nutrionist that in the end, we are just storing up a huge health problem that is going to come home to roost in the future. It seems that common sense has left the building ......

eh? was this reported? how do you know this? shirley the programme should have made a bit of a fuss about it?
I was listening to Jamie talking about this on the radio about two weeks ago. He was getting verbal abuse off some of the mums who were demanding to know when proper food was going to be put back on the menu. Proper food being chips, pizza, fizzy drinks, plastic desserts etc. He said that at one point, mums were passing McDonalds through the railings to their kids.
The problem is, in the TV prog at least, they were offering a 'choice' and the kids were choosing the crap. Choice is not always a good thing.
The problem in a nutshell was obvious in the queue at the checkout in our local supermarket just the other day.
One till, middle aged couple, slim, healthy looking, trolley full of fruit and veg, lean meats, fish, a few snackypoos, wine, hardly any rubbish.
Another till, fat mum, fat dad, two fat kids, trolley full of frozen chips, pizza, loads of breads and cakes, beers, fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolate, etc etc etc. No fresh meat or veg, nor frozen veg. No fruit & veg at all.
Hardly rocket science. I know I dont eat too well, and I know what it does to me, but at least I have got half a clue. But so many folks havent got the slightest idea.

I read it somewhere the other day or was told it by one of my Nathan Barley like chums...
I'll see if I can find it again.

I am not sure that is the case. I suspect if you asked those people what was healthy and what was unhealthy, they probably would know, or at least have an idea.
I do suspect though, that a lot of people are just damm lazy. It's easier to throw some junk into the microwave for 5 minutes than, peel some spuds, prepare some veg and grill a bit of fish (which will normally take me about 30 minutes, inc. cooking ). At the end of the day if you want to eat crap, then that should be your perogative (as an adult you should be able to make your own decisions), however to feed your kids the same crap is a poor situation. Where's the responsibility ?
