livestrong thingy
Discussion
What's with the livestrong braclets thing? What the hel are they for?
I had never heard of them until I spent all yesterday being tormented by the neighbours 10 year old son into bidding for him on Ebay for one. It looks like a bit of plastic to me, and sold by entrepreneurs from their garage to make a few bob.

Are those the yellow ones? If so it's meant to be raising funds for testicular cancer - Lance Armstrong (hence "livestrong") is the reference as he beat testicular cancer (and the rest) and then won the Tour de France.
Yes, that's the cause. Although I think they're bought more as a fashion statement than anything else.
They do yellow, pink, pale blue, red, white and B/W. Some are sold as 'livestrong' type bracelets. Some are sold as 'bring our troops home' bracelets(very new age) and Nike make one!
I want to employ their marketing team. Some are fetching £6-£7 on ebay for 10p worth of plastic, and carging £2.00 delivery for the 28p stamp!

He won the Tour De France 6 times in a row, which is pretty damn impressive for anyone I'd say, particularly a guy who's been through what he has.
The yellow bands (I'm wearing one) are certainly worn by lots as a fashion thing, but its really helped to raise awareness of the cause, and raise millions of pounds for it.
So the fact that everyone is shelling out for a rubber band can only be a good thing!

The genuine livestrong bands only come in yellow, so if it says 'livestrong' and it aint yellow, its not an original one.
The nike one's can come in a matching black & white set, signifying that different races of people can work together. Everyone has jumped on the wristband-wagon now, but I think the publicity it brings is still a positive rather than a negative.

Bidding on ebay isn't the way to go about it though. It's just putting money that should be going to the Livestrong Foundation into the hands of rather immoral people.
I think the bands are a great idea though, they seem to have got evereyone talking about them and, thus testicular cancer which can only be a good thing!

I applaud those who support such a cause as cancer research. However, would it not be more effective to just give to these charities rather than parading around a piece of plastic as if to show off your support of these causes? Just a suggestion.
On a more personal note, the only objects worthy enough to give companionship to the wrist of a chap such as myself happen to come from a mountainous and quaint little state North of Italy.

The bands were designed to promote awareness, as well as raising money.
In some respects it's working, because people are asking questions.
I'm finding the whole livestrong rubber band thing intensely irritating. My 12yr old son has been obsessed with them for several weeks now.Has been; begging, pleading, threatening & sulking to get us to order him more of them from the web.It seems most of the companies flogging them sem to be profit orientated, not charitable at all.Six quid for a rubber band! Talk about money for old rope-drugs would be more cost efficient!.....& fun
OOOPS....I'll get me coat then..........

I sell a type of wristband where I work. It is one that isnt very well known, and probably should only of interest to people who would shop there anyway (albeit they are for charity aswell).
So why do we get loads of random kids who should be in school all day 'Do you have and livestrong/bullying/racist(sic) bands in?'
'No, but we do have these ones'
'Ooh, ok, how much.....?'
They often have no idea what they are for (buy them before we have chance to explain) but get one anyway beacause they are fashionable.
Unfortuately they are sold out ATM. My worry is that when they do arrive back in, the kida will have moved onto a new 'cool' thing to be onto and we wil be left with thousands of the dame things!

I'm well aware of the awareness generation pitch. But still can't help feeling that the message has been lost somewhere.

You can buy them direct $1 a piece, think you have to buy 10 to get them shipped to the uk.

When I was in the US Oprah interviewed Lance (11 Feb). Top fella. They then went to try and beat 300,000 sold in one day, I believe they sold just short of a million
BTW they are a dollar each, IMHO unless the ebayers are willing to donate all their profits from their sale then they shouldn't sell them for more...
