Quite a funny survey came out yesterday-apparantly more Teenagers feel the face age discrimination at work than people over the age of 50. Nine out of ten school leavers said they expereinced age discrimination and were denied interesting or challenging jobs. This compares to 74 Percent of the over 50's.

This is not entirely surprising since if I was charge of recruitment at my place I would be very reluctant to employ anyone below the age of 20-particulary boys.
I find many of them too immature for an office environment.

That's because employers like experience.
Hence this country has messed up by taking away training schemes and apprenticeships...

Not just experience... having a clue too. I got a temp on holiday from college to do some data entry for me, entering customer addresses. If they'd had more knowledge than, for instance, just the use of the word 'proper' before adjectives and who was number 1 in the RnB charts I wouldn't have had to spend a few hours going over all the records and correcting them. I know it's not obvious that for instance Scunthorpe ends in an 'e' but a more knowledgeable older person would have saved me a lot of time. And i would have still paid them the same rate...

Agreed

Wehave had some girls of that age group as receptionists and they have generally been OK-Took the job seriously etc-but we had one lad in as a general admin/stroke accounts trainee and I don't think he was really ready for the office life.

A nice enough lad but spent alot of his time either hiding from the person in charge of reception or waiting behind someones chair until he farted right beside them.

Funnily enough he went and joined the police after he left us, and I don't believe they take people younger than 20 due to concerns about their maturity.
