Any one know about plasma screens?
Discussion
My local home cinema specialist is recommending i spend my megre bucks on a pioneer pdp435xde (abcd1234
).. anyone have this screen? Anyone suggest anything different.
I've had a bit of nose about the web, and there seem to be some doubts about its ability to deal with low quality digital broadcasts... but which channels do they mean? Again any suggestion/ experience gratefully received!

Got the previous model (434) - Excellent screen, supposed to be one of the top 2 screens available. Sky HDTV ready (HDMI inputs will be needed for Sky HDTV broadcasts apparently)
Gives excellent results even with the current broadcast signals. Allegedly, when you play DVD's through the HDMI interface, the picture is breathtaking.(Talking current DVD standards here, not the new HD DVD formats) - Haven't been able to try this yet as am currently lacking the funds for the HDMI DVD player.
Don't be tempted by the very cheap (sub £1000) plasma's - you will just be throwing your money away quality wise!

Do not buy a Plasma. Buy an LCD instead, higher resolutions, and newer technology. Prices are dropping like flies in flyspray.
Check the resolution very carefully. You don't want anything less than 1280x768, as a minimum.
Why? Well, HD (high definition) broadcasts begin soon on Sky (footy and films), Blu-ray and HD-DVD are currently battling to become the next DVD format, and both are HD compatible. HD at its best carries twice the resolution of a normal broadcast (4 x the bandwidth)
If you haven't seen a HD picture, have a look around, they are absolutely STUNNING.

Agree with Parrot re LCD screens, but AFAIK, LCD screens are have a max size of 37"(ish) and at that screen size, LCD prices are roughly equal to 42" plasmas.
Main thing to ensure that you get (regardless of which screen type!) is a HDMI connector as Sky have announced that HDMI is the only HD connection type that they will be supporting - Looks very similar to a USB port in case you go to one of the 'Sell everything, know nothing' chain stores. (I know that the Pioneer has a HDMI connector!)

Id seriously suggest having a look at the new HD DLP rear pros out at the moment.
The Sagem HDb50/45 s out at the moment totally crap on anything available on plasmas less than 4K for less than 2K. ..with no screen burn problems therefore they make awesome pc/xbox monitors too.
Watch the HD demos in Johm lewis or Comet. They are stunning.

Toshiba's 46 or 52" WM48 models (DLP rear projection) are stunning value and 'better' than many plasmas.
The Pioneer XDE models (43 and 50" derivatives) are truly sh1t hot and much cheapness can be achieved by enquiring in this general direction.
If I hear another person say LCDs are better than plasma I will invade Lower Saxony.
I wouldn't get too strung up about 'HD compliance;' subjective performance is often far better than that accompanying products with all the technical boxes ticked, so to speak.
To wit, Panasonic's venerable 37 or 42" PE30 models can still deliver truly delightful results and currently represent a superb trade off between aesthetic acceptability (i.e. does not necessarily compromise relationships too badly) and highest banana performance quotience.
Avoid the cheap tatt with the vigour you might a Yugos Zastavich.
And of course, always vote Tory.
Tharg.

toshiba 46" DLP rear pro can be got for less than £1500 on the net.52" rear pro is £1900 ish.
Sagem45 is £1800.
i would argue with Mr.D that HD(highdef) is quite important.
There is no fully accepted format yet, but I cant see the point in spending 2k ish on a telly that wont work with Sky HD when it goes live in 2006/7
Plus with new HD DVD players and HD discs coming out soon, why buy into old technology.
The Toshs, and Sagem tvs are all certainly HDCP compliant. There are quite a few Plasmas particularly at the moment that are selling in large numbers, which will almost cetainly be incompatible in a few years.

I can vouch for the Panasonics - I've got the 42" and it's superb. Got it for a bit of a steal from Richer sounds - crap crap shop but plucked it from them for over £1000 less than a few other distributors I spoke to.
Pana's are not fully HD compatible, Pioneer's are but need careful set-up to get the best picture. We do full ISF calibration with colour temp and the results are stunning.
I'm in Marbella typing this on a Sony product launch, they will have new HD ready plasma in the next few months and new rear projection LCD stuff.
I'd still recommend Pioneer !

I have a 44" LG (44SZ21) DLP Rear Proj TV and it's rather fantastic - cost me £1300 and searched for it online. Picture is great, but sound isn't fantastic but then that's what surround sound systems are for.....
It's only 33cm deep too, so much slimmer than a regular cathose ray TV, but obviously not as slim as a plasma/LCD.

explains the 'c' grade in geography then.
