I made a point of watching this to see whether, given another chance, we could win the Battle of Hastings.

But what side are 'we' playing? The English? NO, the bloody French!

Execellent! We lost. Which means we won... interesting to ponder how different the last 950 years would have been...

I think what it showed was how lucky the Norman victory was in the first place.

Still the Nomans weren't really French anyway they were Vikings who settled in Normandy in 911 under their leader,Rolf The Viking (also known as King Rollo). The land was given to them by the French King Charles as part of an agreement to stop them attacking and raiding the French.

My wife was quite keen to see this programme (being a student of this period in history). As soon the phrase "the french" was uttered I found myself catapaulted onto channel 5... have the BBC no one capable of checking factual accuracy or would that get in the way of their little "grudge" device.

Oops. Still I got a 'U' in history, and anything south of Margate is France

NB Does calling people 'French' indicate a grudge then? If so, clearly the word is an insult!

Its all a big promo for a game-The Total war series

The original Time Commanders series was going out as Rome Total war was being developed-and uses much the same technology.

If you want to play it for real buy the game-with the added bonus you can add Strategic management.

We could have very likely won, after whipping the Vikings, Harold forced marched his army south, if he had rested his troops it is widely thought he would have won.

He was unlucky not to win anyway! I imagine the political map of Europe would be very different today if Harold had won.

There was an interesting thing on last year (Battlefield Britain) which examined what might have happened if Boudicca had driven the Romans out of Britain: There'd likely have been no Charlamagne to hold off the Moors, and we'd all be muslims.

I love history, speculative or otherwise.

plus William was heading for London, Harold could easily have taken his time heading south, recruited more help on the way even allowing William to take London. Harold just needed to cut any supply line William had then lay siege to London. Norman Cavalry don't work too well in siege warfare.

Me too. That's why Civilisation 2 will always be my favourite game Same variables but mixed up.

You could also ask how the 20th Century would have panned out if the bullet that wounded Adolf Hitler in WW1 had killed him... a few inches... a different century. Just like King Harold in fact! Or Archbishop Ferdinand, whose assasination led to WW1 in the first place. We might still have an Empire.

Civilisation 2 is my all time favourite game as well-It had so much repeat playability because everything was randomised each time. I spent alot of my University days playing that-even managed to Conquer the world on Diety level of difficulty (which I was very pleased about)

I believe (Though fully admit to being completely wrong) that the actor Richard Dreyfuss has written a book about what if the British had won the American war of Independance, no world wars as Britain would have been such an economic & military force, no burgers, the americans would have had fish & chip chains instead, apparently its quite interesting if you like the 'what if' alternative stuff.

Luckily I got my degree before PCs were invented, or I'd have been lucky to get a 3rd!

Ah but would America have expanded so greatly if it had remained a British Colony. It might just have ended up being a larger version of Canada.
