Heard a snippet of a conversation yesterday (apparently printed in the News of the Screws.)
Council tax is being re-banded and houses revalued.
Was told mine will rise from £1.5k PA to over £2k.
Single parents will no longer have to pay.
Work hard for a living, buy a nice house to live in and stay together as a family.
Hope you don't mind if we shaft you

Just claim you are a foreign student and your family are dependants, your home will then be exempt from council tax.
Seems fair enough to me - if you are British and a tax payer you get shafted, if you come from abroad to make good use of this country it gets paid for you by the British tax payer

Hardly - that would be fraud and punishable by a custodial sentence.
It's like saying "I'd be better off selling drugs than doing a 9-5 job". It may be true, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea
It's getting to something when my partner, 3 kids by a previous life, and I are seriously considering selling our home and buying one each. We'd still be together, me spending 3 nights at hers and her spending weekends at mine with the kids but:-
She was over £10k a year better off when we were living seperately!!! And that is net.

The current system is crazy-We have seen the collapse of society over the past 30 years-A prime cause of which was the rise of single parent households and yet still they heavily penalise two parent families.

Wouldn't work, the council would then turn round a say "Oh but you have a second home, here's your bill for both"

No.
By that logic if ever you were to start seeing a lady/bloke who happened to own their own home one of you would be pinged as owning a second property.
For CGT one is in my name and the other in hers. My house is my principal private residence and so is hers, hence the maximum 3 nights a week together at one house. We are not married.

Yep. With the equity in our current home we could afford to buy her a reasonable mortgage free detached 4 bed and me a 2/3 bed semi with a similar mortgage to that we have now. Maybe an even smaller one.
Granted we would have to kiss goodbye to the 2 acres and start interacting with neighbours again but financialy we could look at a new car for her and a holiday every year. We both had far more disposable when we were living apart and I was earning nearly £20k a year less then

Noticed last night, local Council workers walking up & down my road taking photographs of all the houses, probably attempting to guess what it's worth & ready for re-banding.
Not looking foreward to the new bill comming through.
Anyway, An idea we banded around at work. If the local businesses give out an average of, say 1.75% pay rise, the local councils should get a maximum of the same.
