boring tax question!

when i went travelling before for 7 months i claimed a load of tax back (over a grand) although cant quite remember why u can do this. have just been out of the country for the last 3 1/2 weeks can i claim anything / will it be worth it etc?

You got tax back, not because you were out of the country, but because you were not earning taxable income whilst outside the UK. Therefore, you probably hadn't utilised all your tax allowances for the relevant tax year. Therefore, whatever tax you had already suffered under PAYE before you left the UK (and possibly after you came back)was excessive and THEREFORE you were entitled to some of it back.

If you were not in the UK for a mere 3 1/2 weeks, it is highly unlikely that, by the time you get to the end of the current tax year (5 April 2005)you paid too much tax.

The Inland Revenue will only refund you tax if you have already paid too much.

aaah bugger good point i didnt have a job last time as i quit to travel

aaah well will have to find another way to pay for the last months beer!

It'd be great if we got a tax refund everytime we went on holidays

Come to think of it, isn't that what the government are doing for people having kids?
