I am going for my Yellow belt grading and we have just started doing side thrust kicks. My reach and stretch in my legs has never been good even as a child but has been made worse by a motorcycle accident a good few years back.

As a result my kicks are terrible and the ligaments feel very tight. My sensi says that with gradual stretching it will stretch out slowly but im not so sure as it feels really bad.

Is this worth approaching a phsiotherapist (sp?) about you thinks?

Have you thought about Yoga, most of the postures are progressive.

I notice a big difference if I don't practice for a week.

Would this be a join-a-club type of thing or study-at-home type of thing?

Cheers

If you are going to practice on your own, go to a few classes first and get a good book and video.

You need to get it right for it to be of any benefit.

The class I go to is mixed and the guys are far more flexible in the hips than the girls.

I have the same problem from a foot op. What i do is foot press ups... go up on tip toe on the bad leg then relax then tip toe and so on and so on. i do it about four times a day and as many reps as i can. Plus you can do stretches in a warm bath, ie touch your toes, or even sit on the floor in front of your sofa with your legs out in front and sit up straight . Its taken me a long time but its slowly getting better. hope some of this helps(p.s. im no doctor).

Just stretch the relevant ligament/muscle as far as you can go without pain for 2 minutes every day, and slowly you will become more flexible. Just do it gently. Worked for me.

Stretch with consistent pressure, no bouncing. A couple minutes for each stretch a day will show improvements. Best see somebody first thought if you have previous injuries.

As everyone else has suggested, keep stretching. The more you train, and the longer you've been doing it, you'll find it gets easier. I've a problem with roundhouse kicks (Mawashi Geri) due to too many hip and knee injuries whilst playing American Football in my twenties. I'm still not perfect, but I am improving.

If you've got a good Sensei, he/she should should be looking at the spirit in which the technique is executed, not whether the form is perfect.
