I'm trying to find out how much an effect alcohol has on the hearing!
I've heard it has an effect on long-term heavy drinkers, but I'm trying to find out if there are any interim / short term effects ie the effects after a night on the lash type thing.
And also the effects of hunger / an empty stomach has...There are times in the past where I've had an empty stomach and been very very hungry and I am convinced that on these occassions, my hearing also suffered but returned to normal after a while.

Serious question: Clip behind the ear type, one of those tiny little push-in jobbies or even one of those new-fangled, surgically implanted ones?
A behind-the-ear type - albeit quite a sophisticated digital one. Apparently the in-ear ones do not produce enough power to amplify the frequencies which are missing from my hearing.
I'm am very interested in the surgically implanted ones & even the top-level in-the-ear ones too, however it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between the real McCoy's and the one's that claim "Miracles"
I fully intend on using a private specialist - it's just a case of finding the right one.

What kind of frequencies do they have trouble with?
I'm not after numbers, just general low/mid/high kind of ballpark...

My understnding of the issue is that they are not powerfull enough to compensate for the range of frequencies of my particular hearing loss.
ie my hearing loss is across the whole spectrum of frequencies at varying levels.
At the moment, my behind-the-ear aid is probably about as "Top-Shelf" as it gets on the NHS and I'm thinking how much (if any) better I would be going private and taking a money-no-object approach to things.

I have a more narrow range of loss in one ear, that unfortunately coincides with the usual range for speech. In a one-on-one conversation its ok, as long as I'm facing the right way, but its a bit of a pain in the ar$e in groups / meetings etc and I can hardly hear what people are saying if there's a lot of background noise, say in a busy pub.

I am nigh-on deaf in my left ear and my right ear is the one I wear the aid in. Like yourself, background noise is the bane of my life!
I've had a hearing impairment pretty much since birth and I'm 26 now, so I have a fair amount of experience!
Question for you - How do you regard the prospect, hypothetical or otherwise, of going deaf?
How much do you think it would affect you life?

Have to say I don't fancy it much, but if it were a straight choice of deaf or blind, I'd plump for deaf every time.
If you mean totally deaf, as opposed to one ear only, I think it would certainly spoil my quality of life somewhat; my young daughter is just starting to talk and I would hate to miss out on that experience (I'm guessing lip reading a toddler would be nigh on impossible!)
FWIW I partially lost the hearing in my left ear a few years ago for no apparent reason. According to the audiology bods, the ear itself is functioning to spec (apart from a very narrow band loss due to much rifle shooting as a schoolboy) so the consensus of opinion is auditory nerve damage as a result of a viral infection! Weird.
Looking into the possiblilties of hearing aids, maybe not for now but for the future if it gets any worse. Now its simply annoying / inconvenient and I wouldn't want it to go any further if possible.
