Anyone remember the end of the album because a freind recons it ends with more martians coming and someone trying to contact a base but they can't.

He's not dreaming...

The epilogue said:
Pasadina: Looking good, going good, we're getting great pictures here at NASA control Pasadina. Landing craft touched down on Mars 28 kilometers from the aim point. We're looking at a remarkable landscape, littered with different kinds of rocks. Red, purple... how about that, Burmuda?

Burmuda: Fantastic. Look at that dune field!

Pasadina: Hey, wait, I- I'm getting a no-go signal. Now I'm losing one of the craft. Hey Burmuda, you getting it?

Burmuda: Nah, lost contact. There's a lot of dust blowing up there.

Pasadina: Now I lost the second craft. We got problems.

Burmuda: Full contact lost, Pasadina. Maybe the antenna's--...

Pasadina: What's that flare? See it? A green flare coming from Mars. Kind of a green mist behind it. It's getting closer. You see it, Burmuda? ...Come in, Burmuda! ...Houston, come in! What's going on... tracking station 43 Canberra, come in Canberra!... tracking station 63, can you hear me Madrid... can anybody hear me? Come in...! Come in...........!

Thanks.

Yeah the bit with Nasa is what he's talking about. But Im confused. for one I dont remember it on my copy and 2, did Nasa exist in the time when this is set?

I can only think that this added to later copies of the album. I mean steam ships dont really mix with space ships.

The NASA bit is set in 1978. It was on my brother's copy when he bought it when it first came out, so doesn't appear to be a later addition.

In 1938 Orson Welles and The Mercury Theatre Company broadcast Howard Koch’s radio dramatisation of this sci-fi classic and caused the biggest Halloween fright of all time.

They interrupted regular programming with numerous news flashes and first-hand reports that were so convincing thousands of people believed the world was coming to an end.
Loosely based on H.G.Well's novel, Orson Welles' production went down in history as THE PANIC BROADCAST.

War of the world fans might like to know that the BBC World service recently broadcast the last of it’s Worldplay season on Play of the Week, L.A. TheatreWorks have revived WAR OF THE WORLDS, in an all-star production that features Leonard Nimoy, Gates McFadden and many of the original cast of TV’s Star Trek.

Directed by Susan Albert Loewenberg.

I Listened to it on Saturday night and it was really quite good.

Catch a reply while you can at:-

www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/index.shtml?logo

Start the radio player then scroll down to "Play of the week"

According to my sociology book, there was no huge panic when War of the Worlds was broadcast. The panic was just an invention of the media. A few people got scared and the madia blew it out of proportion.
They did an experiment somewhere in Europe where they put out a similar doomsday type message (I don't remember what it was). A few people got scared and called the police, nothing more, yet the media reported a huge panic. It's just the newspapers trying to sell stories. Sorry.

There was an excellent TV movie made in the 1970s about the 1938 radio broadcast called "The Night that Panicked America". Try and track it down if you can.

The book is excellent - still scary after over a century.

The 1950s film is not bad - with suitable anti communist paranoia inserted where appropriate.

The Jeff Wayne album is also excellent - with cracking music and a brilliant narrative.

I wonder will the upcoming Hollywood remake come up to the standards set by its predecessors.

NASA was set up in 1958. It was created by re-branding the old National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA) which had itself been set up in 1915.

possibly true. i am unsure of the provenance of any documentray evidence of that time; it was possibly nothing more than that master of hype, mr welles, ensuring he derived maximum publicity from the stunt.

clever pr stunt, though. ahead of his time.

"the time machine" was on tv the other night - http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0054387/ - had forgotten what a good adaptation it was. rod taylor was pretty credible in the role.

ok, the effects were rather weak but they added to the period charm of the film (1960).

i didn't realize there was a 2005 version of "war of the worlds" in production. apart from tim robbins and tom cruise i can't say i am familiar with the cast; i guess robbins should give it some credibility.

seems an odd vehicle for him; i thought he always went for heavy/worthy/earnest stuff?

Couldn't set in in England though could they? All Hollywood knows - english accent == baddy, so the septics would be rooting for the martians.
