I've had a few of the Satriani tracks on MP3 for a while but never seen the actual concert until the other night.
JS and Steve Vai are quite simply astonishing to see. Such musicianship and techincal dexterity, stopping short of luthier masturbation (ok, Vai possibly crosses that line a few times but the triple neck guitar is so...so...outrageous, you have to forgive him). Can't beleive JS played Satch Boogie even faster than the SWTA recording, I can't even play it at "normal" speed without tripping over the strings all to often.
Absolutely cracking.
Now, on to Yngwie Malmsteen.
I had to scrape my jaw off the floor. Because he was even better? No, because he was an absolute joke. His tone was just horrible, all scratchy abrasive and all that fiddly-twiddly-fiddly nonsense is not only un-clever, it was also just plain tiresome. And the swinging-the-guitar-round-your-neck would have been funny, ONCE, as a nod to past excesses but he did it after almost every 16 bars. And his contribution to Little Wing? Someone should've pulled the plug and took his guitar off him.
One word Malmsteen. Cocaine - leave it alone.

Never really been a fan of YJM. I've heared some the the G3 stuff with Vai, Satch & Eric Johnson & though EJ really balanced it out with a different style to the other two.
For showboating Micheal Angelo has to be seen to be believed. I have seen one clip where he is swapping his fretting hand position from normal under the neck to over the neck without any audiable change in the widdleage

Quite scared that this has been mentioned today - watched G3 on DVD last night. Excellent.

Got both these Dvd's myself. Satriani, I love, great songs, great playing, super legato. Vai, I know loads of people love him, but personally I just dont get on with his music, sure he is talented, but besides Eugenes trickbag and Warm Regards, I dont care for his music at all. Malmsteen, what can I say, the guy is a total loonatic. I love him for it though, he does what he wants and doesnt care what anyone thinks. I do get very tired of his acrobatics(on and off the fretboard), but he started a new style of music, and lots of people love him. My ex teacher is so into YJM thats its not true. I guess his tone is again a matter of taste.

I know techincally, Malmsteen is perhaps bordering on genius, but there more to playing than playing fast. Take the G3 Little Wing - where's the feeling? where's the sympathy to the song? he just ploughs in and goes nee-nee-nee-nee-nee-nee-n-n-n-n-n-n-nee-ne-nee-nee-neeeeeeeeeee at a million miles per hour and then wazzes the guitar around his neck. Again. You can see by the body language of JS and SV that they think he should be sectioned. "Yeah....like....whatever Yngwie...."

It was on BBC not so long ago and is on Sky every now and again. To be honest the rest of the film isn't up to the final duel.
Seconded. I for one could never believe that the Karate Kid was a bluesman. He doesn't get a chance to use his crane technique or anything!
There are a few decent licks in the film, but I think they were mostly played by Ry Cooder, so you'd be better off just watching the duel and buying a Ry Cooder CD!
