Within ten years it's likely that "convergence" will have occurred (one unit for TV, PC, Telephone, etc..) That maybe where they're coming from?
What do I think? The BBC should be made to act like any other commercial organisation. If, as many people suggest, everyone wants to keep the BBC, then run it like any other company. It should have no problem keeping its audience.

If they're going to scrap the licence fee, then the BBC should be funded out of the bucket of money provided by general taxation IMO. Far simpler. After all, the proportion of people who dont own at least one telly is small.
And before anyone says "I haven't got a TV why should I pay?" I would like to point out that I haven't got any children yet I am still funding the nation's schools through general taxation. Where's my tax rebate? I should be getting no-child benefit!

Exactly, pouring governmental money into a badly organised, and intituionalised business is not the way to go.
For a company to succeed it must have independance to achieve its own goals and move with the times, and not have its structure dictated by antiquated government policy.
Edited to add: The Government has a duty to technology to promote the new ideals of an electronic home and to keep GB competetive within the framework of the USA and other developed European contries. If they start to tax a 'new technology' it will hinder and stunt the growth of technologies as the working class majority refuse to 'buy in' to the governments line of thinking (taxing)

My prediction is most people will have moved abroad if the relentless inventing of ways to get more money out of us does not let up.

To be honest it doesn't surprise me at all, take an average bussiness - how many PC's do they have (I know Ikea must have in the excess of 300 in their smallest store) and they have one TV.

The article is actually telling us that the licence fee will remain for another 10 years. After that who knows.
Yes the Times one does but the AOL one didnt mention the 10 years. It was a lot shorter and basicaly just consisted of quotes from the Culture secretary that may have been slightly out of context.
Whatever teh case it is true that ministers in this current government are thinking about taxing PC's. whether that will happen or not who knows.

convergence is no where near. there simply isnt the switching ability available on the networks, and the one technology that could of been used for broadcast (multicast) in the foreseeable future has largely been left in the mud due to certain deployment problems.
