Technical Q - VW 2.5tdi engine
Discussion
No you cant run it on 9 valves.
Think about it like this, theres a very tiny space when the pistons are at TDC, so if a valve head has dropped off and is sitting there on top of the piston as the piston rises to TDC, what dya think will happen when it makes contact with the head?
Dont start it or itll destroy the engine most likely.

It will run...for a while...on 3 cylinders, but will do the piston, cylinder and part of the cylinder head in question absolutley no favours...before the ensuing damage seizes the engine.
Are you sure its not a dicky hydraulic tappet not keeping its pressure??? A bit of dirt holding the bleed down valve open could produce this sort of noise.

Sorry, wasnt having a go. honest!
Please say you didnt take the timing belt off? Take the cam cover off, yes i know its a bugger cos the induction system goes over the top, you should be able to see if the valve stem has come out. If so your in trouble.
Having said all this sat at my computer at work im as much use as an armchair manager during the FA Cup final!
