Does anyone own one?

Or are they only used by armed robbers....?

I used to have one when I was a kid because I wanted to be in the SAS.

The reason I ask is that I have never seen anyone wearing one on the street. The only time you see anyone wearing one is on Crimewatch.

I've got a couple. Use them when the conditions out on the mountains are pretty extreme. Extreme enough to need goggles as well usually though, so not that often.

Depends on what type of balaclava. I always think of the ones that went over your head, ears etc. but showed all you face, like the ones we had as kids. The SAS/terrorist /bank robber ones are ski masks and much too cool to be referred to as balaclavas. Are you thinking of getting some mittens on a length of elastic that goes over your shoulders inside your Parka coat?

This winter goggles have been needed very often in my experience.

You've probably been able to afford to get away to the mountains more often than I have though, although I've got a couple of weeks away next month. Pay rises all round this year please Zod.

I've got an old one (just my eyes, nose and mouth showing) I use for rowing - tend to get quite a few dodgy looks as I'm running through the streets of my town in it at 6am down to the river

Me and bro were out cycling one winters evening and decided to go through the local underpass to avoid the dodgy roads.
At the time it was bitterly cold and ice was everywhere, but as fear of trashing myself on it evaporated the longer we were out, we decided to go flying down the ramp into the subway.
At the botom is a sharp right and it too was ice laden.
The look on the coppers face as i nearly piled into him due to a brief "moment" with the front wheel was priceless.
Then bro came piling in behind and the copper jumped outa his skin at the sight of two masked "felons" standing there laughing.He never said a word just walked off....

When I was a kid I desperately wanted an SAS style one, but my mum wouldn't let me.

Now I have an open-faced one for wearing under a helmet in winter, or occasionally up on the hills.

Great stuff, I reckon that it could be a new gap in the market, fashion wise. Start a balaclava craze, you could have all sorts of designs. You read it here first. It would cause a lot of missed heartbeats. I can imagine walking into Barclays "yes I'd like to withdraw some money"

Fantastic at stopping windchill. Stood in a blizzard in the Alps with one of these - didn't feel a thing. Awesome bit of kit.

I've got one of the black SAS style ones with just 3 holes for the eyes and mouth...

..I use it (with goggles) for skiing in -10 to -20 temperatures..its a life saver..

Wouldn't dream of wearing it inthis country (except maybe when paintballing) as I would expect SO19 to turn v. quickly...
