government gives money to babies

My baby too.
Mrs C got 250 quid for the new baby from the government.
But we can't touch the money for 18 years. It has to be put into a trust fund, and if we tell em to stick this scheme apparently they open a fund anyway and bung the money in for us.
So they've taken, say, £300 off me in tax, taken their cut, given £250 to a four month old baby and made the money inaccessable for 18 years.
Just what I needed.
After 18 years of inflation it'll probably buy a pair of shoes with change for a bag of crisps.
Just what the baby needed.
Have they really nothing better to do than micromanage the finances of a baby?

Cynical ploy to buy votes? Yes
Free money for your kids? Yes (well not quite but you get the drift)
Whats the problem? You child gets £250 to be used in a child trust fund. This is a tax free investment scheme along the same lines as a ISA or TESSA (IIRC). You can contribute to this if you wish, but you dont have to. Then on maturity of the fund (18 years old) it can be used by the child for :
1) Deposit on a house
2) Fund higher education
3) A jolly good pi55 up
4) Pay off debts
5) Pay for divorce of parents
6) any number of other things.....
In fact, you put your something like £200-£300 a year then you can expect the fund to be worth about £12,000 at the end. Ok, there is inflation involved but since the fund is tax free and gains interest it should be pretty immune to the ravages of devaluation....
So, whats the problem again?

I wonder if you could make contributions to your kiddies fund, and set the contribution against your own tax bill (like you do with a pension)

whats your problem with it? Have you any concept of the thousands of children who get their child allowance spent on fags and beer by the parents? who grow to spend their entire lives struggling with debts, adding to the £1trillion pounds currently on the debt pile of the country?
whats exactly wrong with giving people a fighting chance of having a better life than their parents would allow?

Do you honestly think that parents like that will let an 18 year old keep their money, it'll just be taken away from them to help with "housekeeping" won't it? And do think they will bother to put much into the fund anyway? No one forces people to get themselves into most of they debt they end up with anyway, it's a choice, not a necessity, in most cases.

Ok, its of no interest to you, it really only goes to capture the worst of the worst from a life of poverty.
poverty leads to crime, and then it might effect you!
Personally I prefer to walk down the street and help my fellow man, not kick him in the head and spit on him for asking for help.
If everyone followed the examples posted here, we would live like they do in many other countries, where the rich and government has everyting, and the rest have to rely on Aid from other countries just to stay alive.
Your tax is going to help many other countries, would you rather they died hungry? and would you rather help those in the UK as well?

What has destroyed the moral fabric of this nation and rendered many areas unihabitable-is precisely all the 'help' the poor do receive.
At present we offer them a choice work hard and contribute to society or sponge of the state for nearly as much money and no work.
Until we tackle this the inexorable decline of British society will continue.
