They're all on strike during the Olympic Committee's visit!

I would prefer it if Paris did win it.
Paris is only a couple of hours away, so if you want to go see it there is no hassle.
And they get to carry the ridiculous burden of empty buildings and costs that are the legacy of a modern olympics.
By common agreement, the benchmark for the olympics in recent years has been Sydney. Yet even now, Sydney still has to deal with the cost of the event and having white elephant buildings that no-one knows what to do with.
We get steamed up over the Millenium Dome. After the Olympics, there will lots of similar projects all over the place with no apparent purpose.

I really hope we don't get it. If the people that are already here can't get around london without sitting in jams / paying £5 kengestion charges for cars they've sold 5 years ago, how on earth could we manage with thousands of spectators / athletes?
Besides, we haven't even managed to replace Wembley yet!
Perhaps we should sabotage the IOC visit like the French seem to have done! How about slapping Kengestion fines + FPN's for doing 32 in a 30 for all the councillors?

Yes, virtually everyone who currently pays to use a substandard transport infrastructure are really looking forward to sharing their conveyance with a load of non-farepaying europeans with air horns!
It's bad enough when the marathon is on, using the underground is like standing inside a tube of bacofoil!

But alot of the money that will need to be spent on London will need to come from London Council tax payers.

but IF London wins all the road, rail and underground improvements have to be finished on time - remember all the fuss about Athens being late...... It all got done in time (just).

This country CANNOT host major international sports events at present because we do not have the venues.
Where ouside Manchester do we have an international swimming complex (and that only got built for the Comm Games in '02)? or athletics - track or field , or rowing (which we have been quite good at..... and the Thames doesn't count because its tidal and has too many curves)
C'mon, back the bid. Stratford is one of the poorest boroughs in Europe and will greatly benefit. The A12 & A13 get sorted out, half of cross rail finally gets finished, and we end up with some serious sporting venues in which our athletes can train and compete.
London's existing sporting facilities were built for the Empire Games in 1924 (Empire Pool aka Wembley Arena, Earls Court etc). London is one of the worlds great cities and it and the countries population deserve decent world ranking sports facilities so we can hold our heads up with pride. If we have suitable places to train and compete we might actually win a few more medals/competitions.

For once I am not in agreement with you!
I hope London does get it, for a number of reasons. Not least of which is that it will spark the regeneration of a really crap part of London. I know that the Dome was a total cockup but, it had no long term benefit, whereas sports facilities, might provide a worthwhile outlet for people to use, and benefit from.
