Free fruit for school kids
Discussion
Got a letter home from my 6 year olds school.
Basically the school has been selected for a free fruit delivery as part of some new government initiative. Only BEFORE the headmistress accepts she wants parents to volunteer to wash the fruit each day before giving it to the kids. She doesn't want to over stress the teachers.
Is it just me or is the old cow threatening us parents
I was thinking about sending the letter to Jamie Oliver to see what he thought about it.
Thats better, thanks very much

Get the kids to line up and wash it themselves. Builds a routine for them. Like making them tidy the classroom at the end of the day helps give them an inbuilt eye for tidyness.
Bang on the money with that suggestion
All this "nannying" about is what is ruining this country.

Except "old b1tch" headmistress is worried about her staff putting any more than the bare minimum of effort into this. She would probably want parents to supervise the queue knowing her.

my 6yr olds school has been providing fruit since september and I believe that it comes pre washed. Most of the time they seem to have Bananas satsumas but do have apples etc which would need washing.
I dont know what age the cut off is but my 10yr old at the same school dosent get fruit, we have to supply it

Aggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ing obsessive compulsives about bloody clean fruit, hygiene this, bleach that. They should be allowed to build up an immune system for christ sake!
If parents malnourish their kids, the kids should be farmed out elsewhere instead of big brother overly helping them. Fruit costs virtually nothing and I can't really be bothered to finish this rant

Serious question, is fruit supposed to be washed nowadays as I never have and can't think of anyone who does?
You are 'supposed to' but with the incredibly low limits set on residues, there's really no point IMO. Most pesticides residue limits are set "at the level of detection" which means if a sophisticated lab can detect it, there's too much. There are incredibly tight controls on what pesticides can be used and when in the UK, better than most EU countries.
With all the other things that are supposed to give you cancer / mad cow disease / autism is there any point worrying about what might be on fruit? You're better off enjoying the benefits of eating fruit, besides you could be run over by a bus tomorrow.
Now, where's that Worcestershire sauce?
I never wash fruit, unless it's grapes from India, or cherry tomatoes from Senegal. Don't ask me why, just do it.
before anyone starts flaming me, I've worked in the fruit industry for 9 years. I'm not an expert in pesticides, but I work with plenty of people who are. yours, the man from Del Monte
