Forgotten 80's Classics.......Simple Minds

Reminding myself of a recent U2 thread i looked back with some great memories of another pop-rock superband that reached the heights of the mega-band but also dabbled in the absurdities of politics via music.......Simple Minds
Now i gave up on Jim and Co post 'Street Fighting Years'....load of pretentious/righteous bollards i thought (bar 'Soul Crying Out'...class).....and eventually they remained a collection of music dusty & rarely played CDs and.....OMG.....cassettes!

From an avid concert attendee and audiophile to a mere 'oh yeah they used to be alright....' fan

then you get that looking back in a 'oh look what i've found in my collection' stylee......and you realise they really did produce some fantastic stuff

primarily i'm talking the album 'Sparkle in the Rain'.....
I defy anyone who puts this album on to not rock thier white socks off to.....

b)Book of Brilliant Things
c)Speed Your Love to me
d)Waterfront
and especially the immense 'The Kick Inside of Me' and 'C Moon'

i mean ,you've got the Caledonian Jimster giving it his very volcanic vocal best.....the Immaculate Mel Gaynor producing the surging heart of the track with the most effective power play drumming.....Derek Forbes giving an almost relentless 'Entwistle-esk' thunderfinger bass that is almost pornographic in its relentlessness and the sublime Charlie Burchill giving a sweet melodious guitar melody to the proceedings to round all the sushi together..not forgetting Mike MacNiell on keyboards to add further depth to epic tracks along the way.......it surely is a forgotten album of greatness in an era of dirge and blandness......listen to the album and remind yourself it was made/produced in 1983!


prior to that we had 'New Gold Dream'.....which apart from the title track and 'hunter and the hunted'....was pretty standard pop rock fair

and sons and fascination with 'Love Song' and 'The American'

later years produced a fair 'Alive and Kicking' that gave us a sugarry smooth commercial hit with the likes of 'Sanctify yourself' and 'All the things she said'........but for all round hard hitting pop-rock fantasia...

Yep Simple Minds were awesome. Sparkle in the Rain is an all time classic, but then some of their older albums are superb too, Empires and Dance, and Sister Feelings Call are cool... some great tracks, I travel, The American, Theme from the Big Cities...... class....

Have to say though, Real Life wasn't all bad, some good tracks on that, but yes, a lot of overthetop piano balls.......I will dig it out tonight!

I remember singing proper loud and mental to this tune in my car, years ago.

After it finished, I could see the people in the car behind absolutely pissing themselves with laughter.

I have in my hands a vinyl copy of 'Life In A Day' catalogue ZULP1, 1979 Zoom Records. Fro mthem days when vinyl records were about 4mm thick and weighed a ton.

A bit like that thread on cool stuff that aint cool any more, the back sleeve boasts all the boys in their drab velvet jackets, with just a hint of eye liner.

Chelsea Girl was always one of my favourite tracks.

Real To Reel is another good album of theirs. Aways found it funny at school when everyone jumped on ver minds bandwagon, there were orrified to ear that the band had already released six or so previous albums.

time to find my box and stop Grrrrrring...

I agree, I didn't fully appreciate Simple Minds at the time (perhaps because my younger brother did, so they were obviously crap ) but they have since become firm favourites. I have a few CD's, no idea which ones as I rarely bother with the CD's themselves these days. One is live though, and they do rock!

...I had to google to remember the titles as I sold all my LPs at a record fair a few years ago, so don't have these anymore. Will have to see if I can get them on CD.

Oh my goodness - 968 and I seem to have a love of the band formerly known as Johhny And The Self Abusers in common. I was a huge 'Minds fan - saw them at least three times, including the Live In The City Of Light tour. They were awesome live in their day - and many of their albums still sound great today. I had a listen to INXS the other day....they still sound great too.... Yeah Sons and Fascination!! How could I forget, Love Song and Sweat in Bullet are superb.....
