Comic relief is pretty, erm, upsetting really. The that gets me is the number of people dying from easily treatable things in Africa. The drugs are available, they are just not affordable to Africans because of patent laws designed to maintain the status quo and big pharmas being profit hungry. A strong case for a government funded "open source" drug discovery methodology I feel.

I wonder if help/aid is the answer.

I mean, I know that immediate aid is required for health care etc but what about long term? Is it down to opressive governments that such attrocious conditions are still prevailant? Has it always been the case that there's such starvation and rife disease? What changed to make it this way? What do we do about the long-term root causes?

I was watching one of the stories on CR tonight of a boy who was kidnapped to be sold into slave labour. CR found him and reunited him with his family. All I could think was "That could happen again, tomorrow, or the week after, or a month...."

Seems to me like sticking your finger in a dam full of holes....

These conditions were not always prevalent... the thing that has changed is the population. Lack of resources to support the population that now exists.

2 solutions:

1. resdistribute resource to resource poor areas from resource rich areas:

problems: we like our resources. People with the resources are rich. They want it to stay that way. People who want to the resources are poor. We them to stay that way. They can't afford our resources.

2. Allow population to drop to a level where Africa can is self-sustaining.

problems: its a bit harsh.
advantages: AIDS will do it once it reaches a certain prevalence and then the population will crash.
