Are you a "slave" to designer labels or brands?

Does it have to be "Gucci" or "Chanel" for you and do your beans have to be from "Heinz 57 varieties"? Or can you happily live with "George" or "supermarket" beans?

Personally I have been known to buy clothes from that great Italian designer "Mat-a-lan"

TBH I couldn't care less who made my clothes so long as they're quality-made and look good.

The sort of people who buy according to brand are the sort of people who'd spend £30k on a BMW with wind-up windows and an engine from a tractor.

TBH so many designer clothes are now the cheap & chavvy option. Whereas a lacklustre brand like M&S can be the quality item.

having worked as a technologist for M&S I can say with confidence that often the quality standards for M&S goods were higher then the suppliers premium brands (bedding is one area).

TBH I go out of my way to buy clothes without a manuacturer/designers label plastered all over them.

Although I do have an eye for quality, just not when it comes to clothes.

Matalan works for me. And I've used the same pair of shoes for 7 years. But then I have a TVR and Jag to pay for!

Not so much clothes - I just buy whatever I like, feels comfortable, and fits!


Watches though are a different matter - I don't especially buy according to brand, but I do collect and do like the prestige brands like Omega, Rolex, Corum, Chopard, Longines etc.

The Merc A class has the same engine in it as a Skoda but try telling that to some people! They simply will not believe you. It's just the same with clothes.

A few years ago there was a great TV "sting" done on some brand obsessed school children. The producers got a load of identical jeans and put different labels on them. The kids were asked to sort them into levels of quality and style. They sorted them by brand names. The producers then told them that they had been set up! Que great shot of gobsmacked kids!

I'd agree that if quality really is at stake (shoes/food etc), then labels usually carry some sort of cache - ie you are paying more to buy them because they cost more to make to a higher standard, but if anyone could make them, then more often than not, designer label stuff's made to the lowest possible standards at the highest possible price to eke money out of chavs and fashionistas, and they deserve every bit of the fleecing they get if they fall for that one.
