.... or is there?
Over the last few weeks, my garden along with the surrounding Surrey countryside has been liberaly peppered with 2m deep bore holes and traversed by numerous cables whilst a seismic survey is conducted to determine whether there is gas buried beneath the Surrey Hills south of Guildford.
Gas like all fossil fuels, is indeed a finite resource and the search for commercial viable pockets of natural gas understandably needs to be pursued, but as I am fortunate to live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it causes me to stop and reflect personally; on the fact that the unrelenting pressure to pursue this ever dwindling resource, has led to exploration companies searching in my own back yard.
So........ the moral of this thread is......if you are contemplating purchasing a gas guzzling sports car in the next few years, the sensible advice is to re-mortgage the house and bring it forward forthwith .... as there's no time like the present!
PS - Apologies if I have in any way lead the lentilists up a blind alley with this thread. Also, to my regular readers who may have thought that I had finally decided to make an informed and balanced contribution to these hallowed forums!
NB - All joking apart, I would value some informed comment on this topic.

The way I figure it, the sooner we use up all the oil and gas then the sooner the big fish in the manufacturing industry come up with affordable alternatives. If Shell and BP saw their reserves drying up in 6 years they'd be worked very hard to get whatever future tech into cars affordably. Right now their 'green' divisions are just R&D ... one day.

Even if they find gas I wouldn't worry too much about your neighbourhood. They've been extracting oil from the Isle of Purbeck for years and to be honest unless you know where to look you'd never know.
No I'm not unduly worried, as you have highlighted, I also have no real concerns about the aesthetic impact, but moreover, the rather sobering fact that the ever dwindling stocks of fossil fuels has led them to delve into my own backyard, has made me reflect.
(Oh gawd, he's turning green!
