Church fights Da Vinci Code novel
The Vatican has spoken out against what it says are "shameful and unfounded lies" in the best-selling but highly controversial novel The Da Vinci Code.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Archbishop of Genoa, has broken the Catholic Church's official silence on the book.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Archbishop of Genoa, has broken the Catholic Church's official silence on the book.
Its story about the Church suppressing the "truth" that Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene has convinced many fans.
The cardinal told an Italian newspaper: "It astonishes and worries me that so many people believe these lies."
Cardinal Bertone told Il Giornale: "The book is everywhere. There is a very real risk that many people who read it will believe that the fables it contains are true."

IIRC the preface mentions that the historical and religious details contained within the book are true.
And how many other fiction books use the same method to lull the reader into a false sense of security....
..and films...? Fargo (remember that one) states clearly at the beginning that its "a true story". When in fact its completely made up..... when pushed the director admitted, but since it is fiction, it doesnt matter that he lied....
So many other things are - why believe this particular one?
Bloody public.... world would be a nicer place without them....

Calvi was his name, if I remember correctly. He was a senior official with Banco Ambrosiano, the Vatican's official bankers.
"Nuns" the word.
i rather liked the perverse logic in the rather underrated billy connolly film, "the man who sued god" ... made sense to me.
The french have been astonished by the number of "Da Vinci Code" tourists, visiting the various monuments used in scenes in the book and trying to find the clues/hidden artifacts, etc. Mostly yanks I understand, but every nation has it's proportion of gullible fruitcakes I guess...
At this rate PH will probably spawn a number of "Oxo Tower" tourists, visiting London in the hope of entering its hallowed portals....

I don't see the big deal. One load of mumbo-jumbo meets another load of mumbo-jumbo. Nobody will ever know for sure what happened 2,000 years ago, so people with vested interests just quote the bits that suit them. The silly fighting over gays and women priests illustrates this perfectly.
