I quite like my female singers and have recently found a few new artists I quite like, I'm wondering who is missing from my list.

Alicia Keys
Bebel Gilberto (*)
Bic Runga (*)
Ellen Ried
Emilana Torrini (*)
India Arie
Jem (*)
Katie Melua
K T Tunstall (*)
Lene Marlin (*)
Nelly Furtado (*)
Nina Simone
Norah Jones
Sarah McLachlan (*)
Sheryl Crow
Tweet

(*) = my favourite voices.

I'm guessing there are a few names you don't recognise on there, but:
Bebel Gilberto was nominated for a Grammy and sings pleasant mellow songs.
Bic Runga sings essentially pop but with a different taint.
Ellen Reid is a member of Crash Test Dummies and her solo work is similar to their output.
Emilana Torrini recently released Fishermans woman which is a impressive mellow music, but her back catalog (I have Merman at the moment, Love in the Time of Science on order) seems to be great as well.
Jem is a new starter in the vein of K T Tunstall but with a more rock element to it, some good use of riffs from known songs.
Lene Marlin is Norweigan and sings quiet pop.
Tweet is a R&B star made by Missy Elliot but makes good music

I also have albums by Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, Dixie Chicks, Anastacia, Beyonce, ... whom I'm not particulary keen on. Then there is also Missy Elliot, Mis-Teeq, Ms Dynamite... who I despise with a large amount of rude words.

Who is missing?

There is of course the bands with female lead singers such as Texas, No Doubt, Catatonia which I also like.

Bic Runga is very good. One of her (best) songs was in American Pie - used for the morning after scene.

One that is missing is Lisa Leob. Superb singer and songwriter

Natalie Merchant

Lisa Leob as already mentioned.

Joan Osborne?

Eva Cassidy?

You might also want to sample some Indigo Girls to see if that's you're kind of thing...

Well you seem to have entirely ignored soul and the gospel that proceeded it.

Loads of female jazz vocalists.

The vast majority of the country movement...

Go and get a load of Aretha Franklin as has been said, that woman was put on this planet to sing. Utterly utterly utterly spectacular.

I tried Aretha Franklin but all I could find was gospel music which I'm not a fan of. Impressive voice, but from what I found very little in the way of songs that don't celebrate God and the like. Just personal choice - don't mind songs singing about God and the like (some of the greatest Crash Test Dummies talk about religion and beliefs), its more the style of gospel I don't like.

Eva Cassidy is on my listen list (my dad has Songbird).
