Can't see - any medics?

Noticed 10 minutes ago that I couldn't read PH properly - have a bright spot in one eye like I've looked at the sun. It's getting worse and starting to flicker in my perpheral vision.
Had this a couple of months ago and it turned into tunnel vision and had to lie down at home for an hour. Trouble is I am at work now and if it gets worse, won't be able to drive home.
What could it be? (Getting worse by the minute

Called NHS Direct and nurse will call back within 90 minutes. Hopefully it will have gone by then.

Was the flickering of light in a pattern, like zigzags? Or was the flickering initially very small, but getting bigger and bigger, involving more of your vision? If so, and if it has disappeared, then it's a migraine.
In terms of other possibilities, if could possibly a retinal problem, particularly if it is localised to one eye, it is unlikely to be anything like glaucoma, since it does not present with flashing or flickering lights, but with sudden loss of vision, in it's acute form, or insidious field loss if open angle.....
as people have said more than likely a migrane...i never got them but for some reason i started to get them a few years ago but very mildly when i'm stressed usually related to too much coffee or tea! the headache doesn't have to be associated with the visual thing it can be before of after...i usually get them up to an hour after the visual thing but not a normal headache just a tight head!. You probably found it hard to focus depending on where you look and it can be quite worrying the first time you get one!
I think they call it an aura, where you cant see properly, yet you can, see flashyy things, zig zags and shapes, lasts about half hour. I've not had it a while but did go through a stage where I got this 2 times a week with no headache, they have since disappeared. Had double vision in the past too a couple of times, now that is weird, like you are trying to get back into focus and you cant no matter how much you rub your eyes, that last about 10 seconds 
Been there, panicked, researched, relaxed....

OOh, that sounds like the early signs of your head falling off 
Sorry, no, I've had the same thing a few times, I never used to get headaches or migranes so it was a little worrying for me when I first got one but it sounds very much like a migrane.
Have some caffeine, put a warm compress on the back of your neck, turn the lights out and sit by an open window with your eyes shut, get some fresh air

Thanks for all the advice. The blank spot and scrolling flashes (like a barber shop sign) in the corner of the right eye got better but then the headache started. Came home and went to bed for a couple of hours and all OK now.

Sounds exactly what I had, 'flashing lights' in the corner of your eye and a blind spot where you can't see anything - makes reading PH a bu**er.
As I said in my previous post, I never used to get them but now only get them once in a blue moon, normally when I haven't drunk enough liquid in the day, cheese and chocolate are two things that can trigger them as well apparently.

Oh, those are unpleasant!
It's a migraine as already advised. Have had ordinary migraines a couple of times as a teenager then nothing. About 4/5 years ago had the same sight problem as you described. In the office about mid-day. Lasted a couple of hours. No head-ache. I was about 130 miles from home at the time. Phoned my doc for advice it was that strange and worrying.
It has only happened once and I have no idea what kicked it off. Very strange effect though.
