I always thought that Green Day used the figure of 'St Jimmy' to represent the rebellious/destructive side inherent in American teenagers.

The album seems to purvey both a contemptuous view of St Jimmy, but also a compassionate one. Certainly the part in Homecoming about St Jimmy being killed is an emotional low point on the album.

I always took it to mean that there was conflict between the free spirit of American youth and how that should be kept alive (and how it can be crushed by those in power) and the destruction it can cause (e.g. drug abuse, suicide etc).
