Will question the PH massive as a start on this one....


I share a septic tank with my neighbours. The tank is on my land. Next door has been converted to business premises (a childrens nursery ) and they keep blocking the pipes (shared feed pipe) with nappies and baby wipes. Can I stop them using it? If it mysteriously develops a fault and I have to replace it, do i have to share?

Quick and Dirty answers will do - I know I have to check the deeds.

Well, I know nowt about these things, but its your land, your tank, and your pipes (from the boundary).

So charge them.

Steve, AFAIK, it will depend on whether they have a right of way (technically) stated in the deeds/Land Reg or how long they have used the septic tank (x years of unchallenged use gives them a right to use I believe). Do they contribute to the maintenance of the tank? As its a business premises (lots of little turds?) they should be paying more towards the running of the tank than you are (one big sheet)

I aint no lawyer and Im sure one will be along soon (an even bigger sheet)to correct me.

Just ask them to bin the debris (Greek style) instead of clogging up the pit.

I have the same prob with B&B next door that insist on using anti-septic wipes......

Check the deeds is the thing.
Probably clauses in there giving them a right to use the pipes & tank.
Worth checking the smallprint, though, to see if you can get them for business use.

Presumably a grating of some sort over the end of their pipe where it joins the common inlet would ensure any problems just caused it to bsck up into their premises and leave yours flowing...

Thanks to all for the advice - off to search for th deeds. In the meantime I may accidently collapse the pipe while digging the garden.

Be VERY careful - if they do have the neccessary you could land yourself in deep doo doo ()doing that!
