I am guessing it should be. I currently use a cassette and set the volume on the IPod turned up to max, otherwise the output is too low. I have adjusted the firmware on my IPod to get around the ridiculous EU legislation that limits IPod volume to a lot less than the US version.
My brother uses a lead that allows him to plug the IPod into the CD autochanger port of his head unit - they are wuite expensive though and he reckoned not worth the extra cost over the cassette method.
My brother also tried an ITrip - he imported one from the US when they first came out - the quality was crap compared to the cassette so he sold it the next day at a loss.....
At home I tried my IPod connected to my stereo amp, using a min-jack to hifi lead, and I need to crank the stereo amp up a lot higher to get the same level of volume as I get from the CD player.

Got one of the cassette plug ins the other day. 3.40 from Tescos on impulse.
I'm running a Sony Network Walkman through it rather than an iPod, but any MP3 player or CD etc should have the same affect.
The quality seems better than a CD player - no skip etc under any circumstances and is far better than my speakers and head unit - so no worries about quality.
I will never use a CD multichanger again. Or a CD player or... In-car at least.

But car amps are a bit different, there phono inputs are normally low volts(?) , will the ipod output be to high and fry the amp.
The car does not have a stereo.

It would probably depend on the spec of the amp in your car really. I'd have thought it would be unlikely to fry the amp as the output from a UK iPod is quite low but would still be worth getting it checked out. For useablity though I'd stick it through a head unit in some fashion.
Personally I've been toying with the idea of using one of the specifically designed iPod compatible head units that will control the iPod by remote. Seen a couple of examples and they seem to be coming down in price (around £250 at last look).

Its not ridiculous, or at least you won't think so until you end up with tinnitus and partial deafness due to prolonged over-exposure to high volume levels of music.

This is another example of the EU Nanny state that we now have to suffer. US Ipods are significantly louder that European ones - why??? Because of some w
ker in france. All music players have a volume control. It is up to the user to set it appropriately.
I Suppose you also aggree with putting speed limiters in cars as well.........

The software you need is a utility called GOPOD it simply changes 1 setting to tell the IPOD it is not European.

years of gigging in my youth has given me tinnitus, causing permenant ringing and volume levelling (unable to distinguish individual voices in a crowd). Not nice
Have a look for Icelink (By Denison). It works with most headunits and enables full control over the ipod via the multichanger control. You can even hide the ipod under the seat while in use as you really dont need to touch the controls at all.
