What's the first thing you can remember?
There is something called infantile amnesia that suggests that as little kids our cognitive pathways haven't developed enough to retain memories, so the first most of us recall of anything is at about 4 years of age.
Now my wife swears she can recall standing in her cot at her grans, but I must have been about 27 for my earliest memory and on the mersey ferry. My wife is challenging my life held theory that anything prior to 3/4 years is actually just a false memory reconstructed by being told over and over, or later exposure to the same thing.

I can remember hanging my toes over the side of the pram(BIG SILVER CROSS THING) and letting our boxer dog lick my toes.
I can also remember swallowing the 2 inch cot screw (aged 18months)
HAD TO STAY IN HOSPITAL FOR A WEEK UNTIL IT FINSIHED ITS COURSE.
My mother used to keep it in a bottle of olive oil and get it out to show people much to my embarressment.

My first memory is of [shuffles feet in embarrassment] a collision in wheeled vehicle which I was "in charge" of.
Silver Cross pram and I :ahem: collided with the bay window in the lounge, have been told that I cracked a leaded light.
Don't remember much about the post crash bollocking, unlike the one after that suuuuuuperrrrrbbbbbb chip with a 7 iron. Kitchen window that time.
not!

not!I have a very distinct memory of being in my cot and screaming with a beetle running across my favourite blanket - I can remember the location of the cot in the room as well. I have quite a few very early memories...
However there are some things my mum has told me that I have no recollection of, ie pulling a chair over onto my eye and going to hospital when a toddler and crushing a wasp in my hand when in my pram...
Most of my clearest memories are from the age of about 3/4 however.

I can still remember very clearly the night my brother was born. I was two and a half. My grandparents came round to look after me, and brought me a garage to keep me amused. I can distinctly remember whinging to my gran that "I want my mum". Her response was "she's busy at the moment Phil"

There is a well documented case where someone recalled being the park in their pram as a baby and a man trying to abduct them. The nanny fought them off. Many years later the nanny got religion and admitted she had made it up, but until then the child swore he could remember it. It seemed that it had been discussed so often that he had created a false memory of the event. I am tempted to think that the more traumatic memories, which tend to be talked about, and the scene revisited because it is still part of your life, are susceptible to this.
You may THINK you remember, but in fact it is a falso memory. I now just need to convince my wife our wedding was a false memory.

I remember eating pins.
Possibly this is imprinted in my memory due to the understandable reaction of my mother!
I recall wearing a nappy and sitting next to a big sewing box that came up to my chest and putting my hand into a blue tin full of pins.
I was just over 1 year old at the time.
