I am sure there are a few printers/publishers on here?
Me and a mate are thinking about putting together a guide for new students starting at our uni next year, hopefully we'll make a small profit. We are starting to design and write it but all we have access to is MS Publisher. Obviously this is pretty basic but would most printers be able to accept the .pub file or if we output it to .pdf is that better?
Also what would be an approx cost for a 10 page booklet, glossy front, normal inside, probably A5 (as in A4 when opened), run of about 1000, colour?

In my experience if you want to use a DTP file then QuarkXpress and Adobe Illustrator are widely accepted. Some printers will accept jpg, tiff and Adobe Acrobat files, but personal I prefer to use the original DTP file. Whatever, make sure you ask the printer first and note that buying QuarkXpress and Illustrator is an expensive business.

it will need to be either 8 or 12 pages (you need to work in multiples of 4pp sections.
As an example an A5 12pp self cover booklet printed 4 process colours throughout onto 150gsm Gloss from your sullpied pdfs would cost about £400 plus VAT

One of my mates is a printer, and he adamantly refuses to work on anything in a Microsoft Format. It's so much hassle to get it looking right that he'd rather lose the business than spend all day getting it working. Little things like if a font was used that is not on his machines, it is replaced by another, means you can never get it like the customer expects.

I work for a printers too and thats a very fair price. Though you can double that if you supply the artwork in MS Publisher!!
Hows business b17nns? 2005 is being very tough on us, and most of the people I know in the trade.

Thats what we've been thinking, seeing all the tearful parents when they drop their kids off made me want to prey upon their sadness! Bastard? me? No!
Think we will be doing face to face sales on the day, intimate that the kids will get beaten up, exiled etc without the useful advice our guide will offer when i reality its just gonna tell them the cheapest place to get pissed! Looks like I may have to get a copy of adobe or quark then. Sure I can find a reasonbly cheap copy somewhere!

InDesign is far superior, well it is now. It's more accurate, output to pdf is miles better (due to thefact that it's Adobe) comes bundled with their creative suite so doesn't cost £800 for one copy, it's redraw works, etc, etc.
Never going back now.......and it opens Quark files anyway

What about Adobe Illustrator as I mentioned previously? I actually don't like QuarkXpress at all and found Adobe Illustrator far superior, but I'm not familiar with InDesign - is it a competing product from Adobe?

Illustrator isn't a dtp package it's an.....er....illustrating package. You could theoretically layout a document in it, but only up to 4 pages really much more and it's going to be a nightmare to manage.
Do your drawings/graphs/etc in Illustrator or Freehand, place in InDesign, layout, done!

Is InDesign a PC package, can't say I have heard of it for a Mac.
btw - we use Quark for sending all our work to printers, and using .pdf format from Quark too, never had any quality issues with it

The whole trade is tough. Customers want everything cheaper and faster. Margins are being sqeezed left right and centre. Paper keeps going up, staff still expect rises but have you tried to increase your prices?
Not enjoying this trade at the moment.
