Staples Online
Discussion
Hi All,
A few months ago on recommendation for a PHer I brought something off Staples website in a bid to get a free radio. (Which never arrived!).
When I checked my bank statement I had been charged twice(£4.51 x 2)! Not a great sum of money but I don't like being chraged twice espically for a set of propelling pencils worth about 99p.
I went down to my branch of Nationwide and they set up a VISA refund for me for £4.51 which arrived in my account on 17th Jan. (The original transaction was on 17th Nov 04).
I received a letter last week from Staples Credit Control Team saying I owe them £9.02 (£4.51 x 2).
I have just rung said Credit Control team to explain what had happened and the women and the end of the phone nearly got an ear full for being rude.
I explained that I had got my bank to a refund of £4.51 because of the overpayment. She then told me the bank had taken it back twice and that I still owed them £9.02. I tried to explain that Staples had taken it twice in the first place but no luck.
I then asked her to sent a letter to me stating the bank had taken the payment back twice and she said she wouldn't do that. She also reckons Staples sent
me a letter and had already refunded me the £4.51. (I haven't had a letter from them or a credit into my account).
What do I do they are trying to claim £9.02 off me for a £4.51 bill! (Which they have already admitted was an oversight). I have my bank statement in front of me which shows I have only had £4.51 credited back to me from VISA so as have as I am concerned my account balance with Staples is £0 not -£9.02.
What do i do????
Thanks.
Phill
Ted - I know the No Name and Shaming rules but I know a lot PHer's tried to get this offer so can the name remain for a while.

This kind of thing is happening more often I think - I've had many battles like this. BT are the worst.
If you're think you're even, do nothing. It's their problem, not yours. Just keep copies of your letters and CC statrements so if they do dare to sue, you can wipe the floor with them.

Bloody annoying though! (I don't think I have my statements going that far back). The bank should be able to get them for me though.
write them a letter. i wouldn't do the "without prejedice" stuff as you are in the correct from the start. that way you could drag the letter out in court to show these jokers wasting your time when you request that they pay your costs for going to court.
i think the other problem is that her job is not to come to an agreement - its to get the money off you.
circumvent her and call up their head office and speak to the MD's secretary - and explain to her (or him) what is going on. it'll soon be resolved. the last thing head office wants is some irate customer on the phone talking to board members about £4.51.

I'll write them a letter. Anything in particular I should mention or do I just outline what has happened?
As long as you are straight with your facts then outline the situation in a letter and leave it at that.
I'd also cc it to the MD's office just for fun as well and sign off with a comment like "This is not the behaviour I'd expect from a supposedly reputable company....".
If all goes well, the Debt Collection department will give up - it costs less to give up than track all their statements - and the MD should be proper p*ssed cause his company is obviously failing at the customer level.
