Like much of the country there's been a growing issue of gypsies on public land in my neck of the woods. When they take residence there is usually a rise in thefts in the area and always a lot of clearing up of rubbish when they leave.

The above aside for a second though, I notice that some of these gypsies drive £50,000 cars and have pretty expensive stuff. Many have bought fields for tens of thousands. My question: where do they get the money (they never seem to work) and do they ever pay tax. Point being, if I were the Government (or opposition) I'd start with targeting that aspect first, before the other stuff. Remember Al Capone? Well, it was non-payment of Taxes that finally got him and not his racketeering.

The money comes from Building work and dodgy drives. Also, most gypsy families have lots of money stashed away. A family camped near my parents have built 8 new houses nearby, they still live illigally in a field, but make a fortune on the houses.

Mr Howard has made 'travellers' part of his election campaign.

He has promised to make tresspassing a criminal offence, where you do not leave the land upon being instructed by a policeman.

He will probably have to scrap the Human Rights Act (incorporated into British Law by Labour) to do it.

Well done to him if he promises to abolish this poisonous law.

I thought trespassing was a criminal offence - what do I know? Logic and law are not good bed-fellows!

The only problem with the Tories pledge is that they are certain not to be re-elected.

The local news carried a story recently about the local Pikeys (guess which side of the fench I sit!). Local journalist was handed on a plate evidence of "illegal earnings" when a bunch of pikeys came back to their camp with a couple of pickups full of building stuff, two brand new Jap 4x4's and two Jag x-types....

Now, they didnt get them on the DSS, now did they?

No council tax, no income tax, nothing. And they expect that *WE* should pay to have sites and services put in for them. Err, no thanks. You pay, you can get services. No pay - no services (of course if you are unable to pay then thats fine - but lets face it, the average pikey caravan is f-ing huge and costs £30,000 anyway!!!!).

I am a strong believer of the "call someone a thief, and they will be a thief" saying. But unfortunately all of the dealings that I have had with pikeys has been bad. They add nothing, yet take everything - making life awful for those who are unfortunate to live near....

I have little sympathy for someone who buys a house in the flight path for Heathrow Airport (you know its there!). But for someone who lives in in peace in some small village only to have some pikeys destroy the field next to them, hurl abuse, intimidate them and eventually steal their cars - well thats not on is it!!! (p.s. thats a real story btw).

So true.
Funny how Labour immediately call it "racist"
Sounds like a vote winner by the Tories to me, soundbites or not.

It's not a criminal offence in itself (although it is a civil wrong). It becomes a criminal offence if there is also certain criminal intent (e.g. to burgle or to commit a sexual offence).

Read an article in "The Sun" (it was at the barbers while I was waiting and getting bored) about the situation around the country. They hired a plane and flew over one of the largest illegal camps in Essex. They spotted a Porsche 911 and a £112,000 Bentley parked outside some 'vans!

There are no Pikey's in our immediate vicinity (mid-beds) but there is a problem in the region as a whole. I live on a new estate with fields that could easily be 'settled'. I dread that day...

How can it be racist? I don't see them as a different race. I see them as a bunch of no good slackers who seek to take everything they can from society yet give nothing back to it with the exception of misery, crime and fields full of litter. I may be quoting stereotypes above but my experiences of these people has led me to believe no different.

Pah,

This isn't a discussion, for it to be a discussion, you need an opposing argument, and pikeys don't have one, they are modern day horse thieves.

Fcucking scum, the lot of them

saw a " travelling people" representative on GMTV this morning saying they want official areas etc. (aye. right)

funny how our local council paid £100k for an official site with toilets, power etc but the pikey gits use lay-bys a few miles away because "we don't like the site the council gave us".

hanging's too good...etc

I can't remember if I've posted this before, but a couple of years ago I was driving some old biddy to a church meeting when we passed a Gipsy camp.

The old lady said "they're a bunch of crooks, that lot". Trying to be ever the peace-maker, I said "well you can't generalise really". She then said, "no you can't generalise, but those gipsies are". I said "how do you know?" She went on to explain that a couple had knocked on her door that very morning trying to get her to buy a bag of clothes pegs for a fiver. She kept saying no, but they wouldn't leave her house until she'd bought them. Eventually she bought them in order for them to leave. Later that morning she went out into the garden and noticed all her clothes pegs were missing from the clothes line. It transpired they'd sold her her own clothes pegs!

briefly read in a paper this morning, gypsies invaded some fields (down south somewhere) and set up camp.

The whole village went down there & the gypsies have now gone - fantastic idea.

we need a collective of people (not violence, but enough to show we are not intimidated) everytime they pitch their crap somewhere...

my girlfriend nearly hit a gypo's van (she stopped suddenly and stopped inches from his van) he got out and demanded £500, then £400, £300 then settle for £200, g/f argued she hadn't touched his van and he told her he would follow her home and torch our house if she didnt pay, called me to explain - i told her to come home & drive slowly so she didn't lose him... come on son - theaten me if you want??? Luckily he didnt follow her because one of use would have been hurt, plus the fkrs get all their in-bred brothers/cousins involved...

I know it's bad to sterotype, but have never met a nice gypo in my life. Even some police forces are scared to go onto a gypsy camps (no-go-zome areas WTF, and the police are called the 'p-o-l-i-ce' for what?

There's a bunch of new age travellers (dog on a string, white, dreadlocked, girls in rainbow stripy jumpers etc), set up recently round the back of us, in a car park owned by an Audi/Volkswagen respray garage. The car park has remained unused - derelict even and the crap had built up over the years - disused washing machines, mattresses house refuse sacks. The coucil couldn't do anything 'cuaseit was privately owned.
Said tresspassers moved in, cleared up the site, kept themselves to themselves (apart from getting plastered with me and a couple of others last Sat, camp fires bongo's, twirling hippy things, lentil burgers - yeah, OK !!!).
Moving on shortly after heavies threatened the women and children with baseball bats and threats of burning down the trucks.
Not sure who's hurting who in this case. They're very easy going people, old hippies, and seem to have high standards of cleanliness - hell their kids go to the local primary...
Though I take your point about the slither of society that make the front of the Sun. Tarred with the same ignorant brush - shame.

I grew up in the NE of England and a local group of pikeys would do the tours of the local towns.... When they eventually hit my town (suburb) the burglary rate tripled over night....

How do I know? Brother was a copper at the time.....

Tactics employed?

1) Cutting phone lines
2) Threatening small children to get them to leave doors open
3) Sending granny to check out security by trying to sell lavendar
4) blah blah

Are they that bad?

You betcha.... strange how the mini-crime wave passed once the police "moved on" the pikeys. Shame the same tactics can no longer be used due to the "rights" that these people are supposed to have.....

Outsiders who feed on our society and seem to want some sort of respectibility?

Gerrorrfff maaa land....
