if it is true they won't want to ship it too far when the biggest market is on the doorstep. This may be the begining of a much warmer period in Cuban American relations, as Cuba now has something that the US wants.
Either that or you are right a swift strike to free those poor people and bring democracy to another part of the world.

Is there a link for this ? Cuba's always had oil most of it is commercially unviable though.

The fact still remains that they do not have freedom-and without freedom you have nothing.
As for the health care system now that Cuba is not being supported by the USSR-things aren't as good for them as they once were.
I find it fascinating the way that many of you will defend what is after all a dictatorship simply because it is a left wing dictatorship.
I think that there is room for a benign dictatorship in the overall scheme of things. Democracy is not the only viable option. Russia before the revolution had a small very rich elite and a huge impoverished peasant class. The commies introduced new ideas like education and health care for all, decent housing, female equality and promotion on merit. Pity about the excesses of Stalin. Castro has done some good stuff in Cuba for the average citizen, his problem is that state ownership of business is vastly less efficient than capitalism.
If you have a benign dictator and capitalism you can get spectacular results. Dubai, Malaya and Singapore for example. Also a benign dictator is less likely to run a corrupt state than your average democracy. Look at the big trials in France just now and all the problems they have had in Germany and Italy.

You are dependent on the dictatorship being benign-not a very common occurence-and it may start out benign and turn into something else-'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely'
As for Russia, it is indeed a pity about Stalin, 20 million dead!!!
You cannot make excuses-there is only freedom or oppresion.

Democracy by itself is not enough-It has to be a liberal democracy with effective checks on executive powers-and protection for minorities(not only racial)

Society and personal freedom are largely mutually exclusive. One either does what society requires of you or what you want to do. Doing what society requires makes you a good citizen, doing otherwise makes you a criminal.
We're not really free here in the UK, we have little or no say in how our lives turn out and ones ability to choose is directly linked to disposable income. Assuming you choose to be a good citizen...

Actually, I just got back. I was doing "gofer"duty for Louisiana's Governor as she was there signing trade agreements(yes, in spite of the US embargo - it's called state's rights). You are correct, great healthcare system, but it is more of a moneymaker for Uncle Fidel as a service for wealthy foreigners more than the comrades.....When were you there last? My Brother in Law is from Cuba....your relations?
