How do I get a mobile phone unlocked?

I'm considering changing my mobile phone to one that has more PDA functionality. I have my own number on 3 and a work number on Vodafone. I can get a free upgrade to a Motorola A1000 with 3 but I want to use my work SIM in it. Does anyone know if this is possible and/or legal, and if so, how do I do it?

I got my phone unlocked by the Carphone Warehouse for £18 no questions asked. It was legit I would hasten to add.
